Big plays spoil AHS Homecoming

pirit Lake out-scored Algona 27-0 in the fourth quarter to break open a 28-14 contest and went onto a 55-14 win over the red-and-black.  The Indians used big plays in the victory to spoil the Bulldogs’ homecoming as the visitors had seven plays of 36 yards or more in the game.
The red-and-white opened the contest with a bang as they scored on a 36-yard run the first time they touched the football.  The home team answered immediately as they marched 66 yards in nine plays to take the lead.
Hard running by Skyler Groen and Jacob Durant highlighted the drive as Durant ran the final 14 yards for the touchdown.  Aasmund Selbekk split the uprights with the conversion kick as Algona led 7-6 with 5:20 left in the first period and that was also the score at the end of the quarter.
The contest remained that way until Spirit Lake hit the red-and-black with a big play as they connected on a 72-yard touchdown pass.  Another big play set up the visitors’ next score as a 39-yard run was followed by a 31-yard scoring run to increase the lead to 20-7 with 7:03 left in the first half.
A long pass completion set up the next touchdown for the Indians as they scored in a seven-yard run with 1:18 remaining before intermission and took a 28-7 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
