BGHS girls impressive in season opener

Opening the season on the road a long ways from home, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ basketball squad looked impressive in a 71-53 season-opening win over Van Buren Keosauqua.
The game was played on Saturday, Nov. 25 in Cedar Rapids at Coe College as part of Rivalry Saturday as the contest featured two teams that were each ranked 14th in the opening rankings in their respective classes of 1A and 2A.
The black-and-gold forced 21 Van Buren Keosauqua turnovers and turned those miscues into 27 points as the Golden Bears had the lead as high has 24 points on three different occasions in the second half of the game.
The contest was tight early until Bishop Garrigan used a 5-0 run to build a 9-5 advantage and then scored the final seven points of the first period to hold a 16-7 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter.
In the second stanza with the score 17-9, the black-and-gold had an 8-0 run to open up a 25-9 lead but the Warriors had an 8-0 run of its own later in the period to slice the advantage to 27-20.
