Algona raced off to a 16-0 lead early and held off a second half rally by the Humboldt to defeat the Wildcats 16-13 in a Class 3A district football contest played on Friday, Sept. 15 at Algona as the red-and-black improved to 3-1 overall and are now 1-1 in the district.
The home team started fast as Wyatt Wegener returned the opening kickoff 73 yards to the visitors’ 15-yard line. But the Bulldogs could not score a touchdown and had to settle for a 32-yard field goal by Spencer Holmes.
On Humboldt’s first play from scrimmage, Algona senior defensive tackle Dominick Etherington batted Joey Busse’s pass attempt and came up with an interception at the blue-and-gold’s 26-yard line.
But again the red-and-black’s offense could not move the football and quarterback Matt Grein threw an interception on fourth down. On the home team’s next possession, Jacob Durant dashed 65 yards for a touchdown on a simple dive play.
