Algona blows past Gaels, 74-30

Lead Summary

Overcoming a sluggish start, the Algona Bulldog girls’ basketball squad defeated the St. Edmond Gaels 74-30 in a North Central Conference contest that was played at Algona High School on Friday, Jan. 5.
Emma Hjelle open the game’s scoring with a basket for the home team before the green-and-white responded with a 9-0 run to take a 9-2 advantage with 4:25 remaining in the opening frame as Bulldog Head Coach Mike Ford called a timeout.
His girls responded with the next five points on a basket by Nicole Smidt and a three-pointer by Abbey Holmes to slice the lead to 9-7.  But the Gaels scored four of the next six points to hold a 13-9 lead at the end of the first period.
Aliyah Buscher nailed a trey to open the second stanza before the visitors hit a basket.  Another three-pointer by Holmes and field goal by Hjelle gave Algona its first lead since 2-0 at 17-15.
