No. 2 Knights too much for Algona

MASON CITY—Second ranked Mason City Newman scored in every inning in a 15-1, four-inning non-conference baseball victory over the Algona Bulldogs on Thursday, May 26.

The Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, tacked on four more in the second, added two in the third and ended the contest with six runs in the fourth while the red-and-black scored their only tally in the second stanza.

Forest City tops Warriors 9-2

FOREST CITY—Forest City jumped out to early 7-0 advantage and went onto a 9-2 Top of Iowa Conference baseball victory over the North Union Warriors on Friday, May 27.

The Indians added two more tallies in the bottom of the sixth stanza before North Union scored their only two runs of the contest in the top of seventh inning.

Midgets blank Bishop Garrigan 9-0

ESTHERVILLE—Estherville-Lincoln Central blanked the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears baseball team by the score of 9-0 in a non-conference contest played on Wednesday, May 25 at the Hess-Limberg Field.

The Midgets scored two runs in the first, third and fourth innings and tacked on three more in the fifth in the win. The black-and-gold had just four hits in the loss.

North Union squeezes by E-LC 3-2

SWEA CITY—In a pitcher’s duel that featured 27 strikeouts of the 39 outs between the two squads, the North Union Warriors softball squad squeezed by Estherville-Lincoln Central 3-2 on Tuesday, May 24 in non-conference action.

Each squad scored twice in the first inning and the home team scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the third frame. The Warriors did not have a hit in the game and struck out 11 times but still got the victory.

Streuber homers, drives in five in Warrior win

SWEA CITY—Beth Streuber had a single, belted a home run and knocked in five RBI to help lead the North Union Warriors softball squad to a 12-0, three-inning non-conference win over the Emmetsburg E-Hawks.

The green-black-and silver scored five times in the bottom of the first stanza and added seven more in the second frame in the victory. The Warriors had a total of 11 hits in the contest.

Knights top Algona 5-1

MASON CITY—In a non-conference softball contest shortened to five innings because of rain, the Mason City Newman Knights defeated the Algona Bulldogs 5-1 on Tuesday, May 24.

The home team scored three runs in the second inning and two in the fifth as the red-and-black scored their lone tally in the top of the third stanza. Ryan Haynes took the loss in the chalked circle.

Poky defeats Golden Bears 13-1

ALGONA—Pocahontas Area took advantage of six errors by the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears softball squad and handed the black-and-gold a 13-1 non-conference defeat in five innings on Tuesday, May 24.

The visitors started fast by plating six runs in the opening frame, added a single tally in the second and put the game away with six runs in the fifth as the home team’s only run came in the bottom of the first stanza.

North Union Warriors top Forest City 12-1

FOREST CITY—North Union earned their second Top of Iowa Conference softball victory on Friday, May 27 with a 12-1, five-inning triumph over the Forest City Indians.

The green-black-and-silver scored in every inning with six runs in the first frame, single runs in the second and fourth stanzas along with two runs in both the third and fifth innings.

Crooks smashes state record in shot put

DES MOINES—Audi Crooks rewrote the record book at the Class 1A state track meet this past weekend in the shot put to highlight three state championship performances by the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ track squad this past weekend inside Drake Stadium.

Nielsen of North Union soars to state title in high jump

DES MOINES—All the waiting was worth it for Sam Nielsen of North Union as the Warrior senior had to survive a total of seven tiebreaker jumps to win the Class 1A state title in the high jump.

That gold medal winning jump highlighted the performances of the green-black-and-silver at the Class 1A state track meet in Des Moines this past weekend.

AHS girls finish 6th at Class 3A regionals

CLEAR LAKE—The 2022 season came to an end for the Algona Bulldog girls’ golf squad at the Class 3A regional tournament played at the Veterans Memorial Golf Club on Wednesday, May 18.

The red-and-black finished in the middle of the pack in the 12-team field in sixth place with a team score of 410. Clear Lake won the regional title with a team total of 321 as West Delaware also advance to state with their second place score of 362.

BGHS girls’ golfers headed back to state

GRUNDY CENTER—The two-time defending girls’ Class 1A state champions got their first test of the season from the host school but the depth of the squad propelled the team to the regional title.

Bishop Garrigan and Grundy Center both came into the clubhouse with an identical team score of 352 from their top four golfers in the Class 1A regional final played at the Town & Country Club on Wednesday, May 18.

Casey leaps 6’ 0” for state medal

DES MOINES—In his first year of competing in the high jump, Bishop Garrigan’s senior Collin Casey earned a medal at the Class 1A state track meet over the past weekend.

Casey cleared the bar at 6’ 0” to finish in a three-way tie with Quinton McCardville of St. Edmond and Cooper Kock of Ar-We-Va for eighth place.

Montag places in 800-meter run

DES MOINES—Competing in a pair of different events, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ track team participated in the Class 1A state track meet.

On Thursday, the Wolverine 4 x 800-meter relay unit of Joe Mader, Lucas Fehr, Max Fehr and Collin Montag ended up in 16th overall with their clocking of 8:45.02 as Earlham won the event with a winning time of 8:04.95.

Woodyard earns medal at state in shot put

DES MOINES—Algona senior Jaxon Woodyard concluded a great high school career with a seventh place finish in the shot put at the Class 3A state track meet in Des Moines.

Woodyard was eighth after his first three attempts to make the finals and improved one spot in the finals with his best throw of 51’ 6”. J. J. Moore of Webster City won the event with a heave of 59’ 5”.

Prochniak of North Union earns two medals at state

DES MOINES—North Union junior Bryer Prochniak repeated last year’s feat as the talented Warrior earned medals in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes at the Class 1A state track meet last weekend inside Drake Stadium.

Prochniak placed fifth in the 200-meter dash finals on Saturday with a clocking of 22.80. He qualified for the finals with a time of 23.28 on Thursday that was the eighth best time that day as Keaton Bonderson of LeMars Gehlen was the state champion in 22.05.
