Taylor becomes first swim team member to qualify for state

JOHNSTON—Freshman Reese Taylor became the first Algona swim team member to qualify for the state swimming and diving meet at the regional diving meet on Thursday, Nov. 3.

Taylor finished in fifth place in the 1-meter diving event to qualify for the state meet with a new school record total of 411.85. Her final score ranks 16th of the 32 state qualifiers in the event.

Ryan Stundahl ends career with 33rd place finish at state

FORT DODGE—Algona’s Ryan Stundahl concluded his high school cross-country career with a 33rd place finish at the Class 3A state cross-country meet held on Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Lakeside Golf Course just north of Fort Dodge.

Gavin Swift takes 71st place at Class 1A state meet

FORT DODGE—Bishop Garrigan senior Gavin Swift ended up in 71st place of the 154 runners competing in the Class 1A boys’ cross-country state meet held on Friday, Oct. 28 just north of Fort Dodge at the Lakeside Golf Course.

Moriah Knapp places 34th at state cross country meet

FORT DODGE—Moriah Knapp ended up in 34th place overall at the Class 3A girls’ state cross-country meet held on Saturday, Oct. 29 just north of Fort Dodge at the Lakeside Golf Course inside Kennedy Park.

Schupbach 18th, Welbig 29th at 1A state meet

FORT DODGE—A pair of area girls’ cross-country runners finished in the top 30 at the Class 1A state cross-country meet held at the Lakeside Golf Course just north of Fort Dodge on Friday, Oct. 28.

Freshman Tyra Schupbach of West Bend-Mallard crossed the finish line in 18th place overall with a clocking of 20:00.99 in the field of 150 young ladies as North Union’s sophomore Jacey Welbig ended up in 29th place with a time of 20:26.40.

No. 1 Hawks end Wolverines season 42-16

REMSEN—The good news was West Bend-Mallard held top-ranked Remsen St. Mary’s to their lowest scoring total of the season and scored the most points of anyone this fall against the top-ranked blue-and-white squad on Friday, Oct. 28.

The bad news was the No. 1 Hawks were just too strong as they ended the Wolverines’ 2022 season by defeating the purple-and-gold by the score of 42-16.

Swim team drops double dual at Carroll

CARROLL—The Algona swim team dropped a double dual on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the Carroll Recreation Center. The red-and-black scored a total of 48 points that was topped by Carroll’s 72 and Perry was second with 54 points.

The Bulldogs won just one event on the night as Quimby Ross placed first in the 50-yard freestyle event with her winning time of 28.08.

Wolverines post 48-0 shutout in playoff opener

WEST BEND—Returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2015, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines’ football team opened eight-man playoffs in impressive fashion with a 48-0 shutout win over the Clarksville Indians on Friday, Oct. 21.

Algona drops swim meet to Decorah

ALGONA—The Algona swim team hosted their second home meet of the season on Thursday, Oct. 20 as the squad fell to Decorah by the score of 150-44.

Algona took second in a pair of events during the evening with Brooke Ludwig in the 100-yard freestyle race in 1:02.75 and the 200-yard medley relay crew of Cathryn Houge, Natalee Reemtsma, Ross and Ludwig with a time of 2:14.93.

Schupbach places fifth at Twin Lakes meet

GOWRIE—West Bend-Mallard freshman Tyra Schupbach placed fifth overall at the Twin Lakes Conference cross-country meet held on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Gowrie Country Club.

Schupbach crossed the finish line with a clocking of 20:33.84 to earn all-conference honors. Lilly Morey ended up in 27th place in 24:10.44 just ahead of teammate Lexi Welter in 28th place with her time of 24:12.89.

Welbig, Schupbach earn state cross-country berths

MANLY—A pair of area girls earned berths in the Class 1A state cross-country meet in Fort Dodge on Friday to highlight the performances of three area teams at the regional meet held at the Pioneer Town & Country Club on Thursday, Oct. 20.

Jacey Welbig of North Union finished in fourth place overall in 20:03.97 just ahead of West Bend-Mallard’s Tyra Schupbach in fifth place with a clocking of 20:07.36. Both times were the season bests for the youngsters.

Gavin Swift headed to state cross-country meet

MANLY—Bishop Garrigan’s Gavin Swift qualified for the Class 1A state cross-country meet with a top 10 finish at the district meet held on Thursday, Oct. 20 at the Pioneer Town & Country Club to highlight the performances of three area  boys’ teams.

Swift finished in eighth place overall with his time of 17:27.85. Gavin will run at the Class 1A state meet on Friday at the Lakeside Golf Course at 11:15 a.m.
