Golden Bears roll past North Union 71-26

 

ALGONA-Top-ranked Bishop Garrigan used a strong defensive effort to roll past the North Union Warrior girls’ basketball squad by the score of 71-26 on Monday, Dec. 19 in Top of Iowa Conference play.

The contest was deadlocked at 4-4 1:37 into the game and then the home team went on 16-0 run to finish the opening frame with a 20-4 advantage.

Third straight win for WB-M girls

 

WEST BEND—Picking up their third straight victory of the season on Monday, Dec. 19, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ basketball squad improved to 3-2 overall on the year with a 54-26 non-conference win over the Eagle Grove Eagles.

The home team led 17-11 at the end of the first period and increased their advantage to 34-13 at intermission and held a comfortable 45-22 margin heading into the final quarter.

Algona Bulldogs earn huge early NCC road victory

HUMBOLDT—Algona went on the road on Tuesday, Dec. 13 in a North Central Conference girls’ basketball contest and came home with a big 55-40 big early season win over the Humboldt Wildcats.

The home team got off to a fast start by scoring the first nine points of the game and led 14-10 at the end of the first period and led 21-20 at intermission.

Warrior girls improve to 4-0 in league play

ARMSTRONG—North Union improved to 4-0 in Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball play on Tuesday, Dec. 13 with a hard-fought 56-39 league victory over the Belmond-Klemme Broncos.

The green-black-and-silver led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter and 29-21 at intermission. The home team held a 43-28 advantage heading into the final eight minutes of action.

Bishop Garrigan defeats Cardinals

GARNER—Top-ranked Bishop Garrigan built a huge first half lead on Tuesday, Dec. 13 and cruised to a 71-41 Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball win over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals.

Audi Crooks poured in a game-high 27 points for the black-and-gold and was joined in double figures by both Abbie Capesius and Molly Joyce with 10 points each.

Three wins in a row for Wolverine boys

 

WEST BEND—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ basketball team earned their third consecutive win on Monday, Dec. 19 with a 74-67 non-conference victory over the Eagle Grove Eagles.

The visitors started fast and held a 13-9 lead at the conclusion of the first period before the purple-and-gold rallied to take a 32-23 advantage to the locker room at halftime. The Wolverines also led 52-41 heading into the fourth quarter of action.

Hovey leads Bishop Garrigan past Warriors

 

ALGONA—Senior Aidan Hovey tossed in 15 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, handed out four assists and registered a pair of steals to help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys’ basketball team over the North Union Warriors on Monday, Dec. 19 in Top of Iowa Conference play.

The Golden Bears led 16-10 at the conclusion of the first quarter and took a 35-28 advantage to the locker room at halftime. The home team also led 47-38 heading into the fourth period of action.

Humboldt rallies for NCC win over Bulldogs

HUMBOLDT—Humboldt outscored Algona 28-9 in the final eight minutes of action to break open a tight, fast paced North Central Conference boys’ basketball game played on Tuesday, Dec. 13 as the Wildcats posted an 83-63 victory.

Algona led 23-20 at the conclusion of the first quarter of play and the contest was deadlocked at 37-37 at intermission and the home team held a narrow 55-54 lead heading into the final stanza.

North Union boys corral Broncos 76-20

ARMSTRONG—North Union built a nice first period advantage and remained perfect in Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball play on Tuesday, Dec. 13 with an easy 76-20 victory over the Belmond-Klemme Broncos.

The home team built a 20-5 lead at the end of the first quarter of action and increased their advantage to 37-13 at intermission. The green-black-and-silver also led 61-20 heading into the fourth period of play.

GH/V remains perfect with win over Golden Bears

GARNER—Garner-Hayfield/Ventura remained undefeated on the year with a 74-49 Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball victory over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

The home team got off to a fast start as they built a 22-9 advantage at the end of the first period and increased their lead to 42-23 at halftime. The Cardinals led 63-34 at the conclusion of three quarters of basketball.

North Union earns win after long road trip

SIOUX CITY—Braving some winter weather, the North Union Warrior boys’ basketball team made a long road trip to Sioux City to face Westwood at the Tyson Events Center in the “Arena Invitational Basketball Showcase” and came home with an impressive 80-55 non-conference victory.

Bulldogs dominate first ever Algona Girls Invitational

ALGONA—The Algona Bulldog girls’ wrestling squad put on an impressive performance as the red-and-black hosted the first ever Algona Girls Invitational on Friday, Dec. 9 with eight different schools competing.

The Bulldogs had a total of 10 young ladies placed first in their weight class as the Algona squad as a team compiled a record of 28-9 during the evening.

Wolverine boys run past SLSM 62-26

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard used an up-tempo pace to run away from the Storm Lake St. Mary’s Panthers by the score of 62-26 in Twin Lakes Conference boys’ basketball action played on Friday, Dec. 9.

The purple-and-gold started fast by scoring the first eight points of the contest before the visitors scored their first basket at the 5:24 mark of the opening frame.

Stalzer leads WBM girls to second straight win

WEST BEND—Sophomore point guard Hailey Stalzer led the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ basketball squad to their second straight Twin Lakes Conference victory on Friday, Dec. 9 with a 67-12 win over the Storm Lake St. Mary’s Panthers.

Stalzer poured in a game-high 18 points, grabbed five rebounds, pocketed three steals and handed out four assists in the conference rout.

North Union wrestlers take third place at Sibley

SIBLEY—The North Union Warriors wrestling team finished in third place with 227 points at the Sibley-Ocheyedan Invitational held on Saturday, Dec. 10.

Hinton and MOC/Floyd Valley tied for first place in the team standings with 246 points each. Ethan Preston and Landon Price placed first for the green-black-and-silver while teammates Liam Kollasch and Brennen Bollinger took second.

Lake Mills boys rally past Golden Bears

LAKE MILLS—Bishop Garrigan led by 14 points in the third quarter but Lake Mills slowly battled back and rallied for 66-61 Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball win on Tuesday, Dec. 6 over the black-and-gold.

The home team led 14-7 at the conclusion of the first eight minutes of play. The Golden Bears used a strong second stanza to lead 27-26 at halftime and led 50-42 heading into the fourth quarter.
