Rebels stop WB-M girls winning streak

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard played well the first eight minutes but Sioux Central took over from there and ended the purple-and-gold’s four-game winning streak by handing them a 67-50 Twin Lakes Conference defeat on Friday, Jan. 6.

The Wolverines led 15-10 at the conclusion of the first quarter before the visitors took a 31-27 lead to the locker room at halftime. The Rebels held a 48-36 advantage going into the final eight minutes of action.

Wolverines fall to unbeaten Sioux Central

WEST BEND—Sioux Central remained unbeaten on the season on Friday, Jan. 6 with a 73-50 Twin Lakes Conference boys’ basketball victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.

The visitors had a narrow 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and took a 32-27 advantage at the halftime break. The Rebels opened the contest up in the third frame as they took a 54-42 lead into the fourth period.

West Hancock defeats Golden Bear boys 71-59

BRITT—West Hancock earned a Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball win on Friday, Jan. 6 with a 71-59 victory over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears.

Ryan Noonan poured in a game-high 22 points in the loss and was joined in double figures by Jack Grandgenett with 15 points. Carter Schwab narrowly missed double digits with nine points while teammate Drew Muller had five with both Andrew Fogarty and Trayton Cink adding two points to round out the scoring.

Algona boys win Forest City Invitational title

FOREST CITY—Algona crowned four individual champions and won the team title with 242 points at the nine-team Forest City Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Placing first for the red-and-black at Forest City was Elijah Wilhite at 106 pounds, Isaac Wilson at 120, Barrett Morgan at 126 pounds and Tate Slagle at 113 while teammates Thomas Zabka at 113 and Ian Fehr at 152 finished second.

Girls wrestling super regional assignments released

Last week, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the team assignments to the super regional tournaments that will take place on Friday, Jan. 27.

There are eight sites that will host approximately 20 teams and the Algona Bulldogs will travel to Luther College in Decorah to compete in Region No. 8.

Bulldog girls take seventh at Ogden tourney

OGDEN—The Algona Bulldog girls’ wrestling squad finished in seventh place in the team standings with 106 points in the 28-team Ogden Tournament that took place on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Harley Tobin was the top place winner for the red-and-black as took third place at 100 pounds with Savannah Steven earning fourth place at 125 pounds.

Emmetsburg defeats Wolverine girls 46-34

EMMETSBURG—Emmetsburg built an eight-point first period and maintained that advantage most of the game in a 46-34 Twin Lakes Conference girls’ basketball victory on Monday, Jan. 9 over the Emmetsburg E-Hawks.

The home team led 12-4 after the first eight minutes of action and took a 21-14 advantage to the locker room at intermission. The E-Hawks also led 39-24 heading into the fourth quarter of play.

Algona girls earn non-conference victory

GARNER—Algona led the whole way in a 48-24 non-conference girls’ basketball win on Saturday, Jan. 7 over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals.

The visitors led 15-10 at the end of the first quarter and increased that advantage to 22-12 at intermission. The Bulldogs had a commanding 41-15 lead heading into the fourth period of play.

Fourth straight victory for Wolverine girls

CHURDAN—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ basketball squad won their fourth straight game on Thursday, Jan. 5 with a 65-40 non-conference victory over Paton-Churdan.

The purple-and-gold jumped out to a 16-10 lead at the end of the first period and extended that to 38-17 at intermission. The Wolverines took a 54-30 advantage into the fourth quarter of play.

Wolverines roll to 83-28 non-conference win

CHURDAN—A total of 11 different players dented the scoring column as the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ basketball team rolled to an 83-28 non-conference victory on Thursday, Jan. 5 over Paton-Churdan.

The purple-and-gold built a big 27-8 lead at the end of the first period and extended their advantage to 51-17 at intermission. The visitors held a commanding 76-28 lead after three quarters of basketball.

E-Hawks edge WB-M boys 47-43

EMMETSBURG—In a Twin Lakes Conference boys’ basketball contest on Monday, Jan. 9, the Emmetsburg E-Hawks edged the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines by the final score of 47-43.

The home led by one point at 12-11 at the conclusion of the first quarter before leading by three at 26-23 at intermission and led by one point at 33-32 heading into the final period of action.

Bulldogs cruise past St. Edmond 90-47

ALGONA—Sophomore Ben Helmers poured in a game-high 32 points to help lead the Algona Bulldog boys’ basketball team cruise to a 90-47 North Central Conference victory over the St. Edmond Gaels on Friday, Jan. 6.

The red-and-black exploded for 47 points in the opening half as they led 23-16 after the first eight minutes and 47-27 at halftime. The home team held an 80-34 advantage after three quarters of North Central Conference basketball.

JANUARY

Issac Wilson, Jacob Zakba and Tate Slagle win individual titles at the Clear Lake Invitational wrestling tournament for the Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad.

The North Union Warrior girls’ basketball squad defeated No. 7 ranked West Hancock 48-39 in Top of Iowa Conference action.

AHS boys’ wrestlers earn three more dual wins

ALGONA—The Algona Bulldog boys’ wrestling team concluded the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule on Tuesday, Dec. 20 in impressive fashion with a trio of non-conference dual match victories.

The red-and-black improved to 11-1 in overall dual matches so far this winter and the Bulldogs sit at 3-1 in North Central Conference dual meets.

Clear Lake hands Bulldog girls first NCC loss

CLEAR LAKE—A slow start saw the Algona Bulldog girls’ basketball squad fall behind by double digits in the opening half and they never recovered on Tuesday, Dec. 20 in a 48-36 North Central Conference loss to the Clear Lake Lions.

Clear Lake too much for Bulldog boys 77-48

CLEAR LAKE—Clear Lake built an eight-point first period advantage and slowly pulled away from the Algona Bulldog boys’ basketball team in a 77-48 North Central Conference victory on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

The seventh-ranked (Class 3A) Lions started fast by scoring the first 10 points of the contest and led 15-7 at the end of the first stanza. The home team took a 34-23 lead to the locker room at halftime and led 53-33 heading into the fourth quarter of play.
