Pair of former Golden Bears earn post season honors

A pair of former Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears basketball players earned recognition at the conclusion of the season. Angelo Winkel of DMACC was named to the first-team NJCAA Region XI squad while T.J. Schnurr was a first-team American Rivers Conference squad selection. Winkel’s DMACC team ended the year at 24-8 while Schnurr’s Coe team compiled a season record of 16-13.

Ulfers named to 2023 Shrine Bowl

Tall, lengthy Bluejays to long for Algona boys

DES MOINES—A langy, tall top-ranked Bondurant-Farrar Bluejays proved to be too long for the Algona Bulldog boys’ basketball team in the opening round of the Class 3A state tournament on Tuesday, March 7 as the Bluejays handed the red-and-black an 81-52 defeat.

Helmers named third-team all-state by IPSWA

DES MOINES—Algona sophomore Ben Helmers was chosen to the Class 3A third-team all-state team this past weekend by a vote of the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association.

Helmers led the state qualifying Bulldogs in scoring by tossing in 443 points in 25 games for a season scoring average of 17.72 points per contest.

Bulldog boys compete at IATC meet in Ames

AMES—The Algona Bulldog boys’ track team ran at the IATC state indoor meet at Iowa State University on Friday, March 10. The red-and-black finished in 18th place overall with eight team points.

WB-M girls run at IATC meet in Ames

AMES—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ track squad ran at the Iowa Track Coaches Association state indoor meet held on Thursday, March 9 at Iowa State University.

Allie Fehr was the top finisher for the purple-and-gold by taking 10th place overall in the high jump with her leap of 4’ 11”.

The Wolverine sprint medley relay quartet of Hannah Fehr, Maddie Fehr, Hannah Stalzer and Shaylee Wise ended up in 27th place with their clocking of 2:03.93.

Algona girls track runs at Dickinson Relays

CEDAR FALLS—A group of 10 young ladies on the Algona Bulldog girls’ track squad competed at the Dickinson Relays on Monday, March 6 and no team scores were kept during the meet.

Moriah Knapp was the top place winner on the day as the red-and-black senior ended up in sixth place overall in the 3,000-meter run in 10:55.18.

Basketball fans brave the cold

Golden Bears win second straight basketball title

DES MOINES—It is never easy to win a state title in any sport but it is even harder to win two in a row. But Bishop Garrigan was not going to be denied, led by a state tournament record setting performance out of the 2023 Miss Iowa Basketball honoree Audi Crooks.

Crooks named Miss Iowa Basketball

DES MOINES—Audi Crooks of Bishop Garrigan was selected as the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association’s Miss Iowa Basketball.

The 6’ 3” Iowa State Cyclone recruit concluded her fabulous high school career with 2,734 points to rank third behind Elle Ruffridge and Deb Remmerde.

Twice As Nice

DES MOINES—For the second straight season, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ basketball team is the Class 1A state champions.

The black-and-gold used a new-state all-time record performance from the 2023 Miss Iowa Basketball in Audi Crooks, who poured in 49 points to lead the Golden Bears to 68-57 triumph over their old nemesis Newell-Fonda.

Bishop Garrigan rolls in state tourney opener 67-44

DES MOINES—Defending Class 1A state champion Bishop Garrigan scored the first 13 points of the game and never looked back on Wednesday, March 1 in a 67-44 opening round win over Martensdale St. Mary’s.

“We were really solid defensively the first half,” said Golden Bear head coach Brandon Schwab after the win. “We stayed true to our assignments and we trusted each other.
