Fourth straight trip to state for Golden Bear girls

MASON CITY—Top-ranked Bishop Garrigan earned the right to defend their Class 1A state title on Thursday, Feb. 23 with a 76-41 win over No. 11 Riceville in the Region No. 1 championship contest.

The black-and-gold scored the first seven points of the game before building a double-digit lead. The Wildcats battled hard throughout the contest but could not get closer than 11 points at any point in the game.

AHS boys advance to Class 3A sub-state finals

HUMBOLDT—The third time proved to the charm as the Algona Bulldog boys’ basketball team advanced to the Class 3A sub-state final by defeating the Humboldt Wildcats by the score of 70-64 on Thursday, Feb. 23.

The Wildcats had topped the red-and-black twice during the regular season, beating them by the score of 83-63 on Dec. 13 at Humboldt and 89-85 in Algona on Jan. 24.

Mason City Newman defeats Warrior boys in district final

CLEAR LAKE—Mason City Newman claimed the Class 1A, District No. 4 title with a hard-fought 65-57 victory over a stubborn North Union Warrior boys’ basketball team on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

The green-black-and-silver led just once in the contest at 3-2 early yet never trailed by more than ten points in the game.

ALGONA—It was definitely a tale of two different halves on Monday, Feb. 20 in the Class 3A sub-state opener between the Algona Bulldogs and Spencer Tigers as the home team held off a late Tiger run for a thrilling 51-49 victory.

ESTHERVILLE—A young Algona Bulldog girls’ basketball squad battled hard but top-ranked and defending Class 3A state champions Estherville-Lincoln Central was too much as they defeated the Bulldogs 82-40 in the regional final on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Crooks passes Caitlin Clark on all-time scoring list

 

 

ALGONA—Audi Crooks passed Iowa Hawkeye All-American Caitlyn Clark for fourth place on the all-time scoring list in leading the top-ranked Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ basketball squad to a 71-50 win over the Saint Ansgar Saints on Friday, Feb. 17.

The Class 1A regional semi-final contest saw the Golden Bear senior go over the 40-point mark for the sixth time this season as she poured in a game-high 44 points.

Tough night at free throw line dooms Warrior girls

 

 

ARMSTRONG—A tough evening at the charity stripe proved to be the difference for the North Union Warrior girls’ basketball squad as they dropped a 55-49 opening Class 2A round regional tournament contest.

The game took place on Tuesday, Feb. 14 as the green-black-and-silver made just four of 15 free throws during the contest to bow out of the tournament.

Algona girls advance to Class 3A regional finals

 

 

ALGONA—Algona started fast and held off a fourth quarter rally by Cherokee to defeat the Braves 52-44 on Wednesday, Feb. 15 and advance to the Class 3A regional final against top-ranked Estherville-Lincoln Central.

The red-and-black scored the first 10 points of the contest and led 10-0 after three minutes of play. The visitors’ first point came with 3:19 remaining in the opening frame as the home team led 15-6 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

No. 1 Golden Bears cruise in regional opener

 

 

ALGONA—Top-ranked Bishop Garrigan opened defense of their Class 1A state title on Tuesday, Feb. 14 by cruising to an 80-27 win over the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans in the regional opener.

The black-and-gold wasted no time taking control of the contest as they scored the first 18 points of the game and led 22-2 at the conclusion of the first period.

Algona boys hand Lynx just third loss of year

 

 

WEBSTER CITY—Algona finished the regular season with a big statement heading into the post-season as the red-and-black handed the Webster City Lynx just their third loss of the season.

The Bulldogs went on the road on Tuesday, Feb. 14 to conclude their North Central Conference schedule and came home with an impressive 65-50 win over the Lynx.

North Union boys advance to district finals

 

SHEFFIELD—North Union used a balanced scoring attack with seven players with at least six points to earn a spot in the Class 1A district finals after a 75-65 victory over West Fork on Thursday, Feb. 16.

Danyal Fothergill led a balanced Warrior scoring attack with 15 points as both Grady Madden and Aiden Lofstrom chipped in with 12 points.

Newman ends Golden Bear boys’ season 74-65

 

 

MASON CITY—Bishop Garrigan built a 10-point lead in the first half but the Mason City Newman Knights fought back to earn a 74-65 win on Thursday, Feb, 16 in the Class 1A boys’ basketball district semifinals.

The black-and-gold did a nice job of slowing down the Knights’ best two players but teammate Toby Kesten erupted for a career-high 23 points in the contest.
