Bulldogs are NCCC girls track runner-ups

FORT DODGE—Winning five different events was not enough as the Algona Bulldog girls’ track squad finished as the runner-up in the annual North Central Conference track meet held inside Dodger Stadium on Thursday, May 4.

The red-and-black amassed 141.5 points during the meet to place second, a total that was only topped by Clear Lake’s 163.5 points.

Von Bank, Lichter tie for medalist at conference meet

EAGLE GROVE—Olivia Von Bank of North Union and Avery Lichter of Bishop Garrigan had the top scores of the day at the Top of Iowa Conference girls’ golf meet played at the Eagle Grove Golf & Country Club on Monday, May 8.

The two each came in with an 18-hole score of 89. Von Bank had a 44-45 with four pars during the day while Lichter had a 46-43 and recorded five pars during her 18 holes of golf.

Bulldog girls’ golfers place third in NCC tourney

MASON CITY—Shooting their best 18-hole score of the 2023 season, the Algona Bulldog girls’ golf squad finished in third place in the North Central Conference tournament with a team score of 407 at the Mason City Country Club on Monday, May 8.

Clear Lake won the conference title with a team total of 334 to easily out-distance second place Iowa Falls-Alden’s score of 396.

High School Trap-Shoot Results

ALGONA—On Wednesday, May 3, both the Algona and Bishop Garrigan High School Trap-Shooting teams hosted a meet at the Izaak Walton League with two other clubs participating.

The Algona # 2 squad placed first as the unit of Cole Harms, Chase Roof, Cohen Reffer, James Burma and Carson Skow compiled the high score with a 230.

Finishing third was the Algona # 3 group of Cody Harms, Hunter Kollasch, Porter Divis, Treyton Johnson and Jacob Haase with a score of 217.

Opening night attracts 70 cars

ALGONA—It was opening night for the 2023 season at the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday, May 4 as a nice car count of 70 cars signed in a front of nice crowd in the Kossuth County Fairgrounds stands.

The stock car class had the highest car count of the evening with 16 drivers as both the hobby stock and sport mods class had 15 each and there were 12 modifieds at the track on opening night.

WBM shuttle hurdle relay third at Twin Lakes meet

SAC CITY—A third place showing by the shuttle hurdle relay squad highlighted the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ track team at the Twin Lakes Conference meet ran on Tuesday, May 2.

The purple-and-gold scored a total of 25 team points to place 11th during the 12-team meet as the Sioux Central Rebels were the conference champions with a team score of 130 points.

Three wins for NU boys at Manly

MANLY—In their meet before Thursday’s district track meet, the North Union Warrior boys’ track team won three events at the Panther Co-Ed Relays on Monday, May 8.

The green-black-and-silver ended up in fourth place in the team standings with 86 points as the meet was called after the 1,600-meter run with the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400-meter relays remaining due to incoming weather.

Algona boys win NCC track title

WEBSTER CITY—Freshmen Evan Allie sprinted to a pair of individual wins to help lead the Algona Bulldog boys’ track team to the 2023 title at the annual North Central Conference track meet held on Thursday, May 4.

The red-and-black accumulated a total of 151 points during the 19 events to claim the title with Clear Lake taking second with a team score of 139 points.

WB-M girls place fourth in conference meet

SAC CITY—Competing in the always competitive Twin Lakes Conference meet on Tuesday, May 2, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ track squad placed fourth with a team total of 68 points.

The top finish of the night was a pair of runner-up showings as both Maddie Fehr in the 200-meter dash in 26.88 and Kierstin Montag in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.92 for the purple-and-gold.

Golden Bear girls place second at conference meet

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan hosted eight other Top of Iowa Conference girls’ track squads on Thursday, May 4 for the annual conference track meet.

The black-and-gold won six events to finish in second place in the team standings with a team total of 124 points as North Union won one relay and placed fifth with a team score of 70 points.

Both Audi Crooks and Molly Joyce were double winners for the Golden Bears along with Joyce running on a pair of winning relays.

Lichter wins medalist honor at Eagle Grove

EAGLE GROVE—Avery Lichter won the medalist honor to highlight the performances on Tuesday, May 2 at the Eagle Grove Golf Course of the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys’ and girls’ teams.

Lichter won the medalist honor with her nine-hole score of 43 while teammate Eagle Grove’s Kennedy Thacker claimed the runner-up medals with a round of 52.

AHS boys place 6th at NCC tournament

LIVERMORE—Playing as the host school at the North Central Conference boys’ golf tournament held at the Spring Valley Golf Course on Monday, May 8, the Algona Bulldogs finished in sixth place with a team score of 343.

Clear Lake won the conference title with a team total of 310 as Hampton-Dumont was second with a 313 just ahead of Humboldt’s score of 315.

Wolverine girls drop league road match

STORM LAKE—Traveling west to the Lake Creek Golf Course, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ golf squad dropped a Twin Lakes Conference quadrangular.

Pocahontas Area placed first with a team score of 205 as Alta-Aurelia took second with a 211 with Storm Lake St, Mary’s finishing third with a team total of 227 and West Bend-Mallard had just two golfers and no team score.

Bulldog boys’ prevail in intercity clash

LIVERMORE—In a renewal of the intercity battle, the Algona Bulldog boys’ golf team topped the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears on Thursday, May 4 by the score of 170-178.

John Cox of Algona recorded four pars and a birdie on Hole No. 1 to earn the medalist honor with a season-low 39 while Ethan Kuper of Bishop Garrigan registered five pars to take the runner-up medal a nine-hole total of 41.

Henderson, Kuper earn first-team all-conference honors

FOREST CITY—Drew Henderson of North Union and Ethan Kuper of Bishop Garrigan earned first-team all-conference status to highlight the performances two area boys’ golf teams at the Top of Iowa Conference meet played at the Bear Creek Golf Course on Monday, May 8.

A player had to be one of the 10 golfers during the day to make the first team as Henderson ended up in sixth place just ahead of Kuper in seventh place overall.

WB-M boys’ golfers fall in Twin Lakes match

AURELIA—In a Twin Lakes Conference boys’ golf quadrangular played at the Aurelia Golf & Country Club on Thursday, May 4, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines placed fourth with a team score of 200.

Alta-Aurelia placed first in the league match with a team total of 155 as Storm Lake St. Mary’s was second with a 186 and Pocahontas Area was third with a score of 190.
