E-LC defeats Warriors in four sets

ARMSTRONG—North Union won the first set but Estherville-Lincoln Central took the next three games to earn a non-conference volleyball victory over the green-black-and-silver on Thursday, Sept. 7.

The Warriors won the opening set by the score of 25-15 before the Midgets rallied back to win 23-25, 17-25 and 14-25 to take the match.

Beth Streuber led North Union in kills with nine closely followed by Olivia Merrill with eight and Brylie Deim added six more.

WB-M dealt first Twin Lakes’ loss

LAKE VIEW—West Bend-Mallard tasted defeat for the first time in 2023 in Twin Lakes Conference volleyball play as they fell to East Sac County in three straight sets on Thursday, Sept. 7.

The home team took a tight opening game by the score of 23-25 before winning the second set by the count of 12-25 and ended the match with a 14-25 win in game number three.

Swim team wins two events at Perry

PERRY—Picking up a pair of individual wins highlighted a night of performances for the Algona swim team in a triangular meet held here on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

First place winners for the red-and-black included Ella Welp in the 50-yard freestyle race in 26.44 and Reese Taylor in the one-meter diving event with her score of 201.30.

Abbie Capesius finishes 10th on Saturday in CYO Meet

HOLSTEIN—A pair of Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ cross-country runners competed on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Tim Thomas Invitational and CYO meets.

Abbie Capesius ended up in 45th place at the Tim Thomas Invitational with her clocking of 24:39.01 while teammate Rosanne Curtis took 86th place in 29:13.48.

Algona Bulldog boys second at Estherville

ESTHERVILLE—Running truly in a pack, the Algona Bulldog boys’ cross-country team was the runner-up at the Estherville Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 5 to highlight the performances of the four area squads.

The red-and-black had eight runners finish between the 10th and 21st spots in amassing a team score of 59. North Union was sixth with 158 points followed by Bishop Garrigan with 187 and West Bend-Mallard did not have enough runners for a team total.

Mike Smith wins 2nd Super National title

BOONE—For the third straight year, a season champion at the Kossuth County Speedway is a Super Nationals champion.

Hobby stock champion Mike Smith of Lake City won the Super National title on Saturday, Sept. 9 to complete eight straight days and nights of dirt track racing at the 41st annual Super Nationals held at the Boone Speedway.

Golden Bears earn league road victory

EAGLE GROVE—Picking up their first Top of Iowa Conference volleyball victory of the season, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears defeated the Eagle Grove Eagles in three straight sets.

The black-and-gold started fast by taking the opening game by the score of 25-12 and squeezed out a tight 25-23 win in the second set. The Golden Bears ended the match with a 25-20 victory in game number three.

Warriors top West Hancock in three straight sets

ARMSTRONG—North Union earned a Top of Iowa Conference volleyball victory on Tuesday, Sept. 5 over the West Hancock Eagles in three straight sets.

The green-black-and-silver won the opener by the score of 25-13 before taking the second game by the count of 25-17 and ended the match with a 25-14 victory in set number three.

The Warriors were successful on 72 of 74 serves as a team on the evening in the win for 97.3 percent and served 15 aces.

Area girls perform well at Estherville Invitational

ESTHERVILLE—Each of the four area girls’ cross-country squads had some outstanding performances on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at the Estherville Invitational meet.

The four schools placed seven runners in the top 20 finishers during the meet.

Algona finished as the runner-up in the team standings with 66 points with North Union taking fourth with 99 team points while both West Bend-Mallard and Bishop Garrigan did not have enough runners for a team score.

Golden Bear boys 4th at CYO Meet

HOLSTEIN—Competing in a pair of cross-country meets on Saturday, Sept. 9, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys’ team competed in both the Tim Thomas Classic and CYO meets.

The black-and-gold placed 11th in Class B in the Tim Thomas Classic with 304 points as East Sac County won the meet with a team score of 39 team points.

Taylor wins diving event at Fort Dodge

FORT DODGE—Reese Taylor won the one-meter diving event for the Algona swim team on Thursday, Sept. 7 at a triangular meet against Fort Dodge and Sioux City West.

Taylor scored a total of 228.35 points to win the event. Sioux City West placed first with 66 points as Fort Dodge was next with 32 and Algona finished third with 19 team points.

Roethler helps rally Golden Bears past WB-M 36-31

WEST BEND—Anyone who is familiar with the 2023 Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears’ football team knows that senior Caden Roethler is one of the leaders the team looks to make big plays.

Bulldogs go 2-3 in Algona Invitational

ALGONA—Entertaining five other teams on Saturday, Sept. 2, the Algona Bulldogs’ volleyball squad compiled a record of 2-3 in the annual Algona Invitational. The team went 6-6 in games played during the day.

The red-and-black opened the day with a 21-17 and 21-8 victory over the Storm Lake Tornadoes and then defeated the Spirit Lake Indians by the score of 21-18 and 21-16.

Big play Bulldogs top Forest City 44-16

ALGONA—Algona used their big plays to roll to a convincing 49-16 non-district football victory over the Forest City Indians on Friday, Sept. 1 inside Bulldog Stadium.

The high octane Bulldogs had 10 plays of 15 yards or more during the evening to earn their first win of the 2023 season.
