Warriors defeat Algona in district basketball opener
Sergeant Bluff-Luton used a school-record breaking performance by sophomore Connor Groves in a 75-47 victory over the Algona Bulldog boys’ basketball squad.
Groves, a 5’ 11’ guard, nailed nine three-point field goals enroute to a 30-point performance in the Class 3A district opener played at Spirit Lake on Monday, Feb. 20.
Chris Kroll opened the game’s scoring for the orange-and-black with a basket followed by a triple from Groves for a quick 5-0 advantage. But Algona answered with a three-pointer by Jackson Helmers and a hoop from Nick Stein to tie contest at 5-5 with 2:25 gone off the clock.
Groves scored off a steal with a lay-up before Spencer Holmes hit the front end of a two-shot foul and then Groves converted a rare four-point play to give the Warriors an 11-6 lead.
Jackson Helmers scored a field goal for the red-and-black but Sergeant Bluff-Luton responded with six straight points.
Collin Sexton sank the first of two free throws to make the score 17-9 at the conclusion of the first quarter of play.
