Humboldt tops Algona in opener on new field turf
ALGONA—Quarterback Caden Matson accumulated 244 yards of total offense and scored three touchdowns to lead the Humboldt Wildcats to a 33-20 season opening football win Friday. Aug. 28, over the Algona Bulldogs.
Matson rushed the football 17 times for 117 yards, completed nine of 14 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown, and scored on runs of one, five and 51 yards in the contest.
Algona got the pigskin first and mounted a drive deep into Wildcat territory before the Wildcats’ Gabe Gidel picked off a pass at 12-yard line.
The visitors struck quickly as they went 88 yards in just three plays as Matson dashed the final 51 yards for the score. Max Mason booted the conversion kick, and Humboldt led 7-0 with 6:22 left in the first stanza.
The home team answered immediately as the Bulldogs marched 76 yards in nine plays. Trevon Smith hauled in 19-yard pass reception from Tyler Manske for the touchdown. Cameren Rindone split the uprights on the point after try, and the game was deadlocked at 7-7 with 57 seconds left in the first quarter.
