Vincent Joseph Bernardo

A memorial mass was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018 at St. Cecelia Catholic Church. Visitation was held from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus Rosary beginning at 4 p.m. and a scripture prayer service beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Oakcrest Funeral Services.
Vincent Joseph Bernardo was born in Rutland, Vermont, on May 8, 1933, full blood Italian son of Vincent and Mary (Gallo) Bernardo. They moved to the Emmetsburg area when he was young. He graduated from Emmetsburg Catholic High School in 1953. Following high school he attended Emmetsburg Junior College. Vince then worked as a supervisor at Snap-on for 38 years until retiring in 1994.
On November 22, 1955, he was united in marriage to Joan Fain at St. Cecelia Catholic Church. Together they raised seven children. Family was extremely important to Vince and having a large family always had its challenges, but he never made it look anything less than easy.
He was always willing to go the extra mile for anyone. He loved all his family, being involved and genuinely interested in the lives of his kids and grandkids. Vince was a gentle man with a servant heart and always showed a great deal of compassion for people.
Vince was very interested in sports. He participated in basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, bowling, and coached little league sports. He was an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Cecelia Catholic Church.
Vince died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2018, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. He was 85.
Vince is survived by his wife, Joan of Algona; children, Joe (Marilyn) Bernardo of Algona, Bill (Dawn) Bernardo of Ankeny, Michelle Wilhite of Altoona, Tony (Beth) Bernardo of Leander, Texas, Patrick (Tara) Bernardo of Edgerton, Wis., Angie (Mark) Anthony of Golden Valley, Minn., Shelia (Mark) Heid of Lakeville, Minn.; grandchildren, Gina (David) Christoffel, Stacey (Tyler) Granger, Billy Bernardo, Jenna Bernardo, Brando Bernardo, Brayden Bernardo, Joshua Wilhite, Liz Bernardo, Michael Bernardo, Noah Bernardo, Austin Murphy, Paige Murphy, Eric (Courtney) Heid, Trey Heid; great-grandchildren, Chase, Claire and Camryn Christoffel, and Cadence Heid; siblings, Patrick Bernardo of Massasa, Fla., and Marie VanHofwegen of Milford.
Preceding him in death are his parents, parents-in-law; sister, Carmella Gray; and brother-in-law, Harold VanHofwegen.
