Ruth Verna Arend, 91, passed away on Jan. 28, 2018 at the Algona Manor Care Center, Algona. She was born June 6, 1926 to Lorenz and Eva (Lentsch) Gisch in Algona, Ia. She graduated from St. Cecelia Academy at the age of 16.
Ruth was united in marriage to Duane E. Arend on Feb. 14, 1949. They moved to a farm west of Algona where they farmed and raised their family. In 1986 the couple retired and moved into Algona. Ruth was an active member of the St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church. Throughout the years, she supported the Church by being the chair of various committees, participating on boards and spending time weekly in the Adoration Chapel. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America and also served on the St. Cecelia Academy’s Alumni Board.
Cooking for family and friends was one of her pleasures. Ruth also had a passion for quilting, sewing and making afghans. She loved to travel with relatives and friends and treasured her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her six children: Tom, Algona; Lori (Le) Olsen, Sioux City; Shelly (Allan) Kohlhaas, Livermore; Steve (Linda), Tulsa, Okla.; Shirley (Randy) Pierson, Algona and Brian, Dallas, Texas. There are 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. One sister survives, Rachel (Luke) Hamiltown, Bancroft.
Ruth is preceded in death by her husband Duane (1993), infant children: Gerald, Eva and Timothy; parents, Lorenz and Eva Gisch; brothers, John (Mary), Larry (Nina), Barney (Irene); sisters Mary (Joe) Lichter, Fern (Bill) Specht and Dorothy (Wilfred) Kohlhaas.
A funeral Mass will be held Saturday, Feb. 3 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Oakcrest Funeral Services of Algona with a C.D. of A. Rosary beginning at 4 p.m. Online condolences may be made to www.oakcrestfuneralservices.com.
