Roger Eugene Long, the son of Fred and Anna Bertine (Christensen) Long, was born April 17, 1933, in Clear Lake. Roger attended country school and graduated from Manly High School in 1950. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On Jan. 14, 1956, Roger was united in marriage with Mae Fern Jenson in Manly. Roger began working in Algona 60 years ago delivering milk door to door for Carnation. He then sold real estate in the Algona area for 44 years. Roger loved to walk around town and visit with his friends. He remembered everyone’s birthday and always had a hug or a handshake for everyone. He always stayed positive and was a walking example of the kindness found in a small town. Roger loved his family and enjoyed sharing ice cream, cake donuts and orange soda with them.
Left to cherish Roger’s memory are his wife of 63 years, Mae; daughters, Debbie Ann Long of Manson, Sandra K. Buscher and her husband Tom of Algona, Cynthia Mae Anderson and her husband Jay of Grand Junction, Colo., and Bonnie Jo Hahn and her husband Mike of St. Peter, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Liz Buckland and her husband Russ of Ankeny. He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Christin Kay Buscher; and a grandson, Matthew Jon Long.
