Richard ‘Red’ Lane
A private family funeral Mass for Red Lane will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 27, at St. Michael Catholic Church, Whittemore, with burial to follow at the church cemetery. The services will be livestreamed on Oakcrest Funeral Services’ Facebook page.
His family will greet friends from 9 until 10:15 a.m., Saturday, at Oakcrest Funeral Services of Whittemore. Social distancing practices will be followed. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Whittemore EMS and Fire Department in memory of Red Lane.
Richard “Red” Norman Lane, age 89 of Whittemore, Iowa, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2020, at the West Bend Care Center in West Bend, Iowa. He was born on June 27, 1930, on the family farm in Hobarton, Iowa, to William Sr. and Marie (Leonard) Lane. In 1949, Red graduated from the Presentation Academy in Whittemore along with his wife, Norma (Kollasch) Lane. Red and Norma were married on July 8, 1952, at St Michael Catholic Church in Whittemore.
After graduation, Red worked for Gene Martini Gas Station and then as an excavator for Leroy Elbert. He also was engaged in farming during both of those jobs. He purchased the excavation business from Leroy, and from 1973 to 1993, he and his brother-in-law Wayne Goodman operated Lane and Goodman Excavation and Gravel. Wayne was like a brother to him, along with being his business partner. Following their retirement, they sold the business to their sons, Denny Lane and Brian Goodman.
Red enjoyed horseback riding, playing cards, cribbage, joking with people and handing out candy to all the young kids in town. He was also quite the sports enthusiast, playing golf, baseball and fast pitch softball. For 18 years, he refereed boys and girls basketball along with umpiring baseball and softball. Red was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Whittemore and was active in the Holy Name Society.
Red is survived by his wife of 67 years, Norma; three children: Cindy (Bob) Thompson of Leland, Iowa, Gail (David) Adkins of Caledonia, Ill., and Denny (Jan) Lane of Whittemore, Iowa; four grandchildren: Clarissa Thompson, Jeff (Courtney) Adkins, Greg Adkins, and AJ Lane; one great-granddaughter Eleanor Adkins; one sister LaVon Schattschneider; also many nieces, nephews and other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren: Tony Lane and Aubrey Lane; two brothers: his twin James Lane and William Lane Jr.; three sisters and their husbands: Dorthea (Everet) Etherington, Jean (Wallace) Mossefin, and Arleen (Rick) Blue; brother-in-law: Wayne Goodman.
