Orie Petersen Jr., son of Orie and Dorothy (Bonnett) Petersen, was born Feb. 8, 1935, in Burt, Iowa. Bud attended schools in Burt and Livermore. On June 14, 1959, Bud was united in marriage to Irene Opheim at Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona. The couple made their home in Algona and raised three children: Vickie, Kevin and Melissa. Bud was employed by Central States Air Gas, where he ran the oxygen plant. When Central States Air Gas was bought by Trupke, Bud continued working in customer service and retired in 1998.
Bud was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a 41-year member of the Algona Fire Department serving from 1965 to 2006. Once he retired, he continued to volunteer in the activities in which the department would involve him. His favorite was driving the antique fire truck in the local parades. In 1954, Bud began his dirt racing career at the age of 19. He and his brother Darreld built his first race car, a Ford coupe. He enjoyed this hobby until the late 1980s. Bud loved the sport of bowling and loved working at Algona Lanes. He enjoyed sitting on his front porch and watching all the birds on his feeders. Most of all, Bud loved spending time with his family, especially the Petersen family gatherings.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Irene; children, Kevin Petersen of Cedar Rapids and Melissa (Kevin) Rash of Algona; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Jerry Petersen of Waukee; sisters, Sharon Fagan of Madrid, Betty (Bill) Johnson of Algona, and Rose Ann Fokken of Algona; and numerous nephews, and nieces, along with other family members.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Orie and Dorothy Petersen; daughter, Vickie Elbert; brothers, Harold, Darreld, Bobby and Donald Petersen; and sister, Sandy Dehler.
