Opal Fae Cook Sparks was born in Algona on Jan. 22, 1927. She was the beloved daughter of Frank and Nellie Cook. She passed from this life on May 16, 2019, at the Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Colo., at the age of 92.
An exceptional student, Opal began college at the age of 16 at Iowa State Teacher’s College. She earned her bachelor of arts followed by her master's and Ph.D. in education. She was prominent in her work in special education, introducing special education in the Colorado schools and across the nation. She had many awards and accolades in her long career.
Surviving are her brother Dwight and his wife, Denise, of Algona and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Chester, Elmer, Donald, Russel, Richard and an infant sister, Ethel, as well as Terry, Don, Chester Cook and Charyl Cook Finders.
There will be no services, but burial is in Crown Hill Cemetery in Wheat Ridge, Colo.
