Melvin “Pete” Hugo

June 15, 1934 — Oct. 5, 2018

ALGONA — Melvin “Pete” Hugo, age 84, of Algona peacefully left this earth to join many loved ones on Friday, Oct. 5, 2018, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the First United Methodist Church in Algona. The VFW Post #2541 and the Haag-Turner American Legion Post #90 of Algona will conduct military rites. Burial will take place in the Buffalo Township Cemetery in Titonka. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m., Monday at the Lentz Funeral Home in Algona.

   Melvin Glen Hugo, the son of John and Martha (Severins) Hugo, was born on June 15, 1934, in Buffalo Center. He graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1955. Pete served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. He married Norma Gerdis on June 8, 1957 in Titonka. Norma passed away in August 1992. On May 20, 1994, Pete married Nancy Koskovich in Algona. Pete worked as a lineman with REC in Thompson for 25 years and then he owned and operated the Woden Locker for 15 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Algona and a former member of the Thompson Lions Club. Pete enjoyed woodworking. He made many pieces from recycled wood and gave many treasured keepsakes to family and friends. Pete also enjoyed trapping, being outdoors and helping Doug farm but especially cherished his time spent with his family, grandchildren and the “little dweebs” (great grandchildren).

   Left to cherish Pete’s memory is his wife of 24 years, Nancy; children, Jeff Hugo of Lake Mills, Steve Hugo of Ventura, Doug Hugo and his significant other, Gale Simpson of Lake Mills and Tammy Stevens and her husband, Kent of New Ulm, Minn.; step-daughters, Julie Aschenbrenner and her husband, Dana of Iowa City and Jill Lichter and her husband, Mark of Burt; 15 grandchildren, Alyssa (Andrew) Hanna, Stephanie Pueggel, Nick (Angela) Barker, Laura (Nick) Girres, Daniel Hugo, Jessica (Kevin) Nitcher, Justin Hugo, David Hugo, Joe Aschenbrenner, Sam (Michelle) Aschenbrenner, John Aschenbrenner and Alex, Emma, Andrew and Aiden Lichter; and 12 great-grandchildren.

His parents; wife Norma; a daughter, Stephanie Hugo; a grandson, Brandon Hugo; sisters, Donna Wieth and Harlene Guinn; and a brother, Harvey Hugo, preceded him in death.
