Mary Virginia “Ginny” Hinken

Mary Virginia “Ginny” Hinken of Burnsville, Minn., passed away on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018 at the age of 96. Ginny, the daughter of Leo and Mayme Sernett, was born in Pocahontas, Iowa, on July 17, 1922. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Rochester, Minn. She married the love of her life, Charles, on Feb. 21, 1946. Chuck and Ginny raised their family and resided in Algona, Iowa from 1949 to 1980. They spent 72 years together guiding all those around them with their wisdom, example, and love.
Ginny is survived by her beloved husband, Charles, and her three daughters, Marcia Holterhaus of Circle Pines, Minn.; Mary (Steve) Marquard of Faribault, Minn.; and Jan Kehe of Palatine, Ill.; as well as her grandchildren, Jill, Mark, and John (Brooke) Holterhaus; Luke, Michael (Samantha), and Anna Marquard; and Alex and Lisa Kehe; and by her great grandchildren, PJ and Charles Sandhei; Beatrice and Bernard Holterhaus; Taylor Holterhaus; and Samuel, Lucy, Louis, and Oscar Marquard. She is also survived by her sister, Joan Mulligan of Colorado Springs, Colo., and several nieces and nephews. Ginny was preceded in death by her parents, her sons-in-law David Holterhaus and Alan Kehe, her brother and sister-in-law Marvin and Mildred Sernett, and her brother-in-law Patrick Mulligan.
A funeral mass will take place on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 145 Jersey Avenue South, Golden Valley, Minn. Visitation will occur from 9:30 to 11 a.m., with mass beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Shrine of St. Jude at www.shrineofstjude.org, the American Cancer Society at donate3.cancer.org, or a Catholic school of the donor’s choice.
