Lois (Menke) Vaske

A funeral Mass for Lois (Menke) Vaske will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 9, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Bancroft. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with Rosary at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 8, at Oakcrest Funeral Services in Bancroft. Visitation will continue one-hour prior to the service, Friday morning at the funeral home.
Lois Ellen (Menke) Vaske was born April 6, 1923, in Peterson, daughter of Paul B. and Cora Mae (Curley) Matson. She grew up in Peterson, Iowa, attending Peterson High School, where she was the Valedictorian of her Class of 1941. Lois was very active in school and there wasn’t an activity she wasn’t a part of. After high school she went to college in Minneapolis, Minn., to study to become a Medical and X-Ray Tech.
Lois was united in marriage to Raymond (Jimmy) Menke on Nov. 27, 1948, at St. John’s Catholic Church. They made their home in Bancroft where they raised their family. She worked for Dr. Egan as a medical tech, the Bancroft Register, Bancroft Nursing Home, and for Dr. Tom Lensing. Jimmy preceded her in death on May 15, 1982.
Lois married Linus Vaske on Oct. 8, 1996, in Bancroft. Lois enjoyed crocheting, sewing, gardening, cooking, music, playing bridge, golfing, dancing, and swimming. She loved being with her family. She had a beautiful smile and many friends. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, CDA, St. John’s Altar Society, St, John’s Choir, Bancroft Senior Citizens Center, and the Ladies VFW Auxiliary. Linus preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 2007.
Lois (Menke) Vaske passed away Sunday, March 4, 2018, at Acura Health Care Center in Bancroft at the age of 94.
She survived by her three children, Linda (Dean) Koppen of Spencer, their children, Robyn (Mark) Peterson and son, Tyler Hovey; Sara (Brad Schmidt) and children, Ashley Weringa, Aaron Weringa, Bode Schmidt, and Brady Schmidt; Susan (Larry) Sohsen of New Hope, Minn., their children, Lisa (Mathew) Atkins, and Mark (Sarah) Sohsen and their children, Benjamin Sohsen and Luke Sohsen; and Dianne (Bruce) Schiltz of Granger and their children, Tracy Morain and Emily Dunlavey and her children, Haley Dunn, Madison Dunn, and Carter Dunlavey and sisters in law, Janet Winkel Muller, Marjie Menke, and Kathryn Matson, along with many nieces and nephews and her nursing home family.
She was also survived by eleven step-children, Linda Lappe and husband Dennis of Bancroft, Lois Lappe and husband Tom of Bancroft, Fred Vaske and wife Debbi of Omaha, Neb., Bruce Vaske and wife Marsha of Ledyard, Elaine Kahler and husband Kenny of Bancroft, Brian Vaske and wife Judy of Bancroft, June Pfeffer and husband Luke of Algona, Gloria Laubenthal and husband Don of Bancroft, Gary Vaske and wife Geriann of Bancroft, Greg Vaske and wife Annette of Bancroft, and Carol Hagedorn and husband Roger of Bancroft; 32 step-grandchildren; and 37 step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Linus Vaske and Raymond Menke; parents, brother, Paul Matson; sister, Dorothy Montgomery, and two step-grandchildren.
