Kay Smith, age 71 of Algona, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020. Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the First United Methodist Church in Algona, with the Rev. Cynthia Finn officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.
Kay Lucille Harkness, the daughter of Charles and Wilma (Clark) Harkness, was born June 8, 1948, in Forest City. She worked as a crossing guard and then became a CNA at Algona Manor Care Center, retiring in 2011.
Kay met Larry Smith when Kay's son Todd was in the Big Brother program. Larry became Kay's significant other for many years. Larry had no children of his own; he stayed by Kay's side and her six children's sides through the good and the bad times. He never left Ka'ís side. They were united in marriage Oct. 14, 2017, at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona.
She enjoyed her cats, sewing, crocheting, needlepointing, gardening, canning, camping and fishing.
Left to cherish Kay's memory are her husband Larry; children, Todd (Laura) Dyslin of Mason City, Brian Dyslin of Indianapolis, Ind., Penny Dyslin of Forest City, Holly Hamlett of Cedar Rapids and Stacy Dyslin of Forest City; 21 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her brother Glenn (Pat) Harkness of Apple Valley, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Kaylenne Dyslin, sister Dixie Harkness, and brother Kenny Harkness.
