A funeral Mass for Kathleen Griffin will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 22, at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Algona. Visitation is from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, at Oakcrest Funeral Services, Algona, with a CD of the rosary at 4 p.m. and a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery, Algona.
Kathleen “Kathie” Frances Griffin was born Sept. 8, 1934, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the daughter of Mel and Irene (Reddin) Griffin. The family lived in Plankinton, S.D., for three years before moving to Algona, where her dad started a lumberyard. Kathie attended and graduated from St. Cecelia Academy in 1952. After high school she attended Briar Cliff College where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Education in 1956.
Following college Kathie moved to California for a year to teach before moving back to Algona. She taught at Bishop Garrigan High School for seven years. In 1964, she started teaching seventh and eighth grades at Garner-Hayfield where she taught for 32 years before retiring.
Kathie was a lifelong member of St Cecelia Catholic Church where she was an organist and involved in many ministries. She began playing the organ when she was in grade school.
Kathie enjoyed collecting figurines of frogs and The Three Wise Men, listening to music, golfing, taking bus tours, and going for motorcycle rides. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court, St. Cecelia #283 for 66 years. Kathie was a past board member of the Algona Public Library and AMU Cable TV. She was a member of the Algona Business and Professional Women.
Kathie died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, at Kossuth Regional Health Center. She was 84.
She is survived by her cousins, Richard (Liz) McMahon of Maplewood, Minn.; Jeanne McKinney of Portland, Ore.; and Monica (Ken) Day of St. Cloud, Minn.; cousin-in-law, Sharon McMahon of Hasting, Minn.; and many close friends.
