Karen Jane (Kern) Hardgrove was born Aug. 25, 1946, in Algona, daughter of Melvin and Nellie (Lowman) Kern. She grew up in Algona, attending Algona High School. Following high school, she worked in child care, spent 10 years working at Ludwig’s Café and then worked at Universal Manufacturing from 1983 until retiring in 2001.
On Jan. 28, 1967, Karen was united in marriage to John Edward Hardgrove. To this union, one daughter was born. Following the loss of her husband, Karen found love again with her special friend, Richard Ford.
Karen enjoyed watching TV, jigsaw puzzles, number fill ins, adult coloring books, an occasional Old Milwaukee’s Best and loved her flower beds. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
She died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019, at Kossuth Regional Health Center. She was 73.
Karen is survived by her daughter Janelle (fiancé Kerry Hudspeth) of Britt; grandchildren, Jacob (Shelly) Weiland of Cresco, Jenna Weiland of LeRoy, Minn., and Jordan Weiland of Britt; adopted grandchildren, Darielle True, Kaylee Hudspeth, Sydney Hudspeth and Ryleigh Hudspeth; great-granddaughter Nova; special nephew Brian Bloom; siblings, Delmar (Joan) Kern of West Union, Dale Kern of Claremont, Calif., Franklin (Bette) Kern of Algona, Robert (Jennifer) Kern of Claremont, Calif., Linda (special friend Henry Ferguson) Grems of Algona and Steve (Cindy) Kern of Monroe; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband John in 1974; soulmate Richard Ford; son-in-law Jon Weiland; infant brother Richard Kern; siblings, Martin Kern, Opal Bloom, Kay Groesbeck, Gary Kern, Kenneth Kern and William Kern; sister-in-law Judy Kern; and niece Sarah Sorile.
