John W. Leininger

September 28, 1934 - September 3, 2020

 

John W. Leininger, 85 of Albert Lea, Minn., died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2020 at The Woodlands at St. John’s on Fountain Lake.

John was born Sept. 28, 1934, in Whittemore, Iowa, the son of William and Arela (Rusch) Leininger. He was baptized Oct. 28, 1934, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Whittemore, and was confirmed at the same church in 1948. After he graduated from Whittemore high school, he was drafted into the United States Army and served our country from 1957 to 1959. 

On June 20, 1958, John married Charlotte P. Meier at St. Paul, and the two had four children: Steven, Philip, Jayne and Julie. In 1959, they made Albert Lea their home. John worked at Queen Stove’s for short time and for 37 years at Streater’s as an inventory controller. After retirement, he helped deliver flowers for Ben’s Floral and volunteered for Meals on Wheels delivery. 

John was an avid cribbage player and spent his lunch hours playing with his co-workers. He loved card games, gardening, golfing, bowling, evangelism and spending time with his grandchildren. John was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, where he taught Sunday school and served as an elder.

John is survived by his wife, Charlotte Leininger, Albert Lea; his children: Steven (Lori) Leininger, Kasson, Minn., Philip Leininger (Hank Blum), East Amwell, N.J., Jayne Leininger, Apple Valley, Minn., and Julie (Jon) Ness, Lakeville, Minn.; five grandchildren: Lindsey (David) Marquez, Bryan (Stephanie) Leininger, Thomas Leininger and fiancé Hillary Liverman, Abbie (Troy) O’Donnell, and Mollie Ness; his great-grandchildren: Olivia Smith, Tyler Smith, Lucy Tower, Sophie Tower and Logan Rausch; his brother, Harlan (Marilyn) Leininger; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Cleo and Dean Benschoter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters: Marie and her husband, Floyd Gabbert, Helen and her husband, Earl Weaver, and Lois Zimmerman and her husband, Harold; and his brother-in-law, Harold Colwell.

A public drive through visitation will take place at Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7. Private family services will be held, and interment will be in Graceland Cemetery in Albert Lea.
