James "Jim" Harms
July 22, 1937 — April 5, 2018
WEST BEND — James Donald Harms was born July 22, 1937, in Kossuth County, Iowa. He was the son of Irvin and Edna (Balgeman) Harms. Jim graduated from the West Bend High School in 1956. After graduation, he entered into the U.S. National Guard. On April 28, 1962, Jim married Bonnie Weydert at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph. The couple settled on a farm east of West Bend, where Jim began farming with his family. Jim also trucked and shelled corn, with his biggest year being 225,000 bushels. Jim retired in 2002 at the age of 65.
Jim was a member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in West Bend and also served nine years on the Ottosen Elevator Board of Directors. He enjoyed motorcycling, four-wheeling, socializing at McDonalds, but most of all snowmobiling. Jim and Bonnie enjoyed vacations to Wisconsin, Minnesota, and 32 years at West Yellowstone. Throughout this time, the couple owned five Ski-Doos from 1971 - 1975. Jim learned from his mistakes and from 1975 - 2017, the couple owned 24 Artic Cats and two Kitty Cats.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie of West Bend; daughters, Annette (Tony) Girres of West Bend and Sherrie (Kerry) Wagner of Whittemore; grandchildren, Andrea (Jordan) Berte, Dustin (Jenny) Girres, Kayla (Ross) Winkelhorst, Alli (Jake) Lundgren and Kody Wagner; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Wyatt, Zack, Luke, Remi, Max and Jax and brothers, Donald (Rose) Harms and Russel Harms.
