Irene Emily (Berger) Elbert was born on Feb. 14, 1932, in Willey, the daughter of John and Cecilia (Neppel) Berger. She attended school in St. Joe until the eighth-grade.
On Jan. 18, 1950, Irene married Melvin M. Elbert at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Whittemore. Irene and Melvin were blessed with five children: Diane, Sandi, Terry, Randy and Jeffrey.
Irene held various jobs. She raised chickens, sold items from the garden, worked at Zumach Grocery Store and worked at Snap-on for 24 years.
She enjoyed many things in life. She loved gardening, flowers, traveling to Wile Rose Casino and Jackpot Junction to play blackjack. She also enjoyed canning jams. Her jam was known as Grandma Bamma Jamma. It was the best jam around. Irene was a member of the Rosary Society and a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Whittemore.
Irene passed away on Nov. 3, 2017.
Irene was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Each and every grandchild and great-grandchild was special to her.
She is survived by her children, Diane (Roger) Hansen of Whittemore, Sandi (Donald) Goede of Algona, Terry (Carol) Elbert of Fort Dodge, Randy Elbert of Whittemore, Jeffrey Elbert of Evanston, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Marvin (Mary Jo) Berger of Toledo; sister-in-law, Joann Berger of Nashua and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband, Melvin; daughter-in-law, Vickie Elbert; brothers, Paul Berger and Leon Berger; sisters, Louise Becker, Mildred Studer and Lorraine Erdman.
