Hugh ‘Lefty’ Walsh
Hugh Lawrence “Lefty” Walsh was born April 13, 1919, at Sac City, the son of Hugh L. and Mary Halloran Walsh. He attended Sacred Heart School in Early his first two years and moved with his parents to a farm southwest of Bancroft, completing his education at St. John’s School in Bancroft and graduating from high school in 1937.
Lefty was married to Marina Deitering on Dec. 30, 1940, at St. John’s Church in Bancroft. They lived in Davenport from 1940 to 1944, when Lefty enlisted in the Navy, serving until 1946 aboard the aircraft carrier "U.S.S. Copahee" in the Pacific Theater. After his discharge they returned to the Bancroft area where he farmed and worked as a rural mail carrier, retiring from the postal service in 1982 after 36 years. Marina passed away in March 1991.
Lefty liked to participated in sports. He was a member of Bancroft’s 1936 state championship junior legion baseball team and played for several towns in the old Kossuth County League. He also played baseball, basketball and softball in the Quad City Industrial League while residing in Davenport. Lefty was an avid fisherman in later years.
Lefty served on the St. John’s parish council and St. John’s school board. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars where he served in several offices and was a long-time commander of V.F.W. Post 7639.
Lefty passed away at Accura Health Center in Bancroft on Feb. 16, 2019, at the age of 99.
Survivors include his daughters Barb Hutchinson of Omaha, Neb.; Ann Marie and husband Phil Heldorfer of Bancroft; and Jean and husband Charles Farrow of Aurora, Colo.; Also surviving are six grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and a sister, Marmion Walsh of Albuquerque, N.M.
Lefty was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; one brother; a son-in-law, Ken Hutchinson; and his grandson, Jeff Heldorfer.
Per his wishes, cremation services have taken place. Private burial of the cremains will occur at a later date.
