Elnora Hurlburt, age 85 of Algona, passed away on June 8, 2019, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. Memorial services were Wednesday, June 12, at the United Methodist Church in Fenton. Inurnment took place at the Fenton Township Cemetery of rural Lone Rock. Visitation was Tuesday, June 11, at the Fenton American Legion.
Elnora Louise Hurlburt was born Feb. 23, 1934, near Bancroft, the daughter of Alfred and Luella (Junkermeier) Schadendorf. She attended elementary school in Ledyard and later Lone Rock when her family moved there in 1944. She graduated in 1952 from the Lone Rock School, where she was active in music and sports.
Employment after high school included the Lone Rock Telephone Office, Lone Rock Café and Priebe’s grocery store.
On Dec. 27, 1953, she married Junior Hurlburt at the St. John Lutheran Church in Burt. A lifetime of adventures began shortly after when Junior went into the U.S. Army. While they were stationed in Missouri and Arizona, Elnora worked for the Officer’s Club.
They returned to Lone Rock and began farming and raising a family. Elnora was very active in her community, serving the Fenton United Methodist Church, helping with 4-H clubs, Boy Scouts, Bible School, Lone Rock Legion and Auxiliary. She enjoyed many hobbies, including sewing, pottery, quilting and gardening.
Her family isn’t quite sure how she managed to be a full-time partner with her husband in farming and create beautiful quilts, but she managed to make each child a quilt when they married and a baby quilt for each grandchild when they were born. In addition, each grandchild was presented a denim quilt upon high school graduation.
Elnora loved to travel, and she and Junior enjoyed several cruises, as well as trips abroad to places such as Finland, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia, Alaska and Hawaii. She especially loved their winters in Arizona, where they made great memories with friends and family.
Elnora had a series of strokes beginning in 2002. In 2008 she became a resident at Hawkeye Care Center in Bancroft, until the time of her death.
Elnora is survived by her husband of 65 years, Junior Hurlburt. Also surviving are her four children, Randy (Corrine) of Fenton, David (Linda) Lone Rock, Audrey (Tony) Thomas of Bloomington, Minn., and Penny (Nick) Rahm of Lone Rock; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four sisters; one brother; and many nieces and nephews. Elnora was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.
The Lentz Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family. Condolences may be left at www.lentzfuneralhome.com.
