March 7, 1921 - August 26, 2020
A private funeral service for Eleanor Brandow was held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29. Following the service, burial was in Riverview Cemetery.
Eleanor Ruth Brandow was born March 7, 1921, in Cresco Township, rural Algona, daughter to Joseph and Mildred (Spear) Fraser. She spent her childhood in rural Algona and Sexton, Iowa, graduating from Algona High School in 1939, where she received a certificate in normal teachers training. She taught in county schools near Algona before she and Ellsworth “Gene” Brandow eloped and were married in Unionville, Missouri, on Sept. 26, 1942, setting the stage for a family life built on determination and high spirit.
Following their wedding, Eleanor and Gene moved to the family farm southwest of Algona and raised their six children. Eleanor was a homemaker throughout her life and began working at Dau’s Garage in 1967 as a bookkeeper. She remained there until her retirement in 1989. Following her retirement from Dau’s she worked as a teacher’s aide at Bryant Elementary School for a short time.
Throughout her life, Eleanor’s top priority and greatest joy was her family. She loved every opportunity to spend time with her children and grandchildren, her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. She and Gene enjoyed traveling to visit family wherever they were scattered. She thrived in their company.
Eleanor enjoyed making treats for others, and everyone wanted some of her famous potato salad and scalloped corn at the many family reunions that she and her sisters hosted throughout her life. She was an excellent seamstress and spent many hours sewing and mending clothes, creating special gifts and embroidering. She made every holiday and birthday extra special. She was humble and kind and cherished the simple things in life like afternoon walks in the sun, a dance in the living room, a hot cup of coffee and a fresh piece of angel food cake. She loved flowers, gardening and spending time outside, proving her boundless energy and keen eye for every four-leafed clover. She loved to tell stories about her childhood, loved music and rocking babies. She proved over and over again that age was just a number. Four words were not allowed in her household: “Ma,” “Ain’t,” “Can’t” and “Quit.” Delightfully stubborn and strong-willed, she exemplified the value of hard work and dedication to any task. She was a source of strength and showed unwavering love to her family throughout her life. She will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know her.
Eleanor died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020 at Algona Manor Care Center. She was 99 years young.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Terry (Diane) Brandow of Algona, Rhonda (George) Malkmus of St. Augustine, Fla., Cindy (Dan) King of Eau Claire, Wis., Tom of Algona, Jolene (Darwin) Trickle of Ames and Julie (Bill) Rowe of Fort Dodge. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Virgil Fraser of Syracuse, N.Y. sister-in-law Adeline Fraser of Bloomington, Minn.; brother-in-law Bill Dau of Algona; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
