Edwin Rotert

ALGONA — Edwin "Ed" Rotert, age 86 of Algona, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018, at his home. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona with Rev. Ed Girres celebrating. Visitation will be held at Lentz Funeral Home on Friday, July 6, 2017, at 5-7 p.m., with a 7 p.m., Knights of Columbus Rosary and Chalice Service.
Edwin Joseph Rotert Sr., the son of Henry and Argina (Puetz) Rotert, was born on Jan. 11, 1932, in Roselle.  After Ed’s schooling, he enlisted in the United States Army on March 14, 1952, serving during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on March 13, 1954. He served for 17 years in the Army Reserves. On Jan. 4, 1954, Ed married Loretta May Moggio at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Breda, Iowa. The couple moved to Royal Oak, Mich., where Ed worked for the US Postal Service.  The couple later moved to Grand River, where Ed farmed for 45 years. He also enjoyed working security in the grandstand during the Iowa State Fair for 15 years.
Ed was a member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church, a Fourth Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus and past Grand Knight of Council 8702, Osceola, Iowa. He also taught faith formation classes in Osceola for eight years.  He enjoyed watching westerns, hockey and football, attending his grandchildren’s events, bowling, camping, and farming.
Left to cherish Ed’s memory is his wife of 64 years, Loretta of Algona; children, Gannie (Randy) Porter of Wahoo, Neb., Edwin (Shelly) Rotert Jr. of Mt. Ayr, Cheryl (Jon) Grether of Algona, Kathy (Russ) Van Daele of Hudson, Anne Rotert (Scott Arnold-fiance) of Morris, Illinois, and James (Lisa) Rotert of Algona; 26 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas J. Rotert; parents, Henry and Argina Rotert; brothers, Donald, John, Anthony, Louis, Leroy, Laverne (died in infancy) and Leroy I (died at 2 years of age) Rotert and sisters, Mary Tiefenthaler and Gladys Rotert (stillborn).
 Memorials may be directed to St. Cecelia Adoration Chapel Project and the Kossuth Regional Health Center Foundation.
