Duane ‘Dewey’ Johnson
A funeral service for Duane Johnson is 10:30 a.m. today (Thursday, Aug. 22) at Bethany Evangelical and Reformed Church in Ledyard. Burial will be in Highland Home Cemetery in Ledyard with military honors conducted by the Matzener-Estle American Legion of Ledyard and the Seely-Walsh American Legion of Whittemore.
Duane ìDeweyî Elwood Johnson was born Sept. 30, 1924, in rural Ledyard, son of John and Alvena (Engelbarts) Johnson. He received his education in Ledyard and then served in the United States Army as a combat engineer during World War II. Duane was married to Laura Riedel on Sept. 7, 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona.
Duane and Laura farmed near Ledyard until moving to Algona in 2014. He was a longtime member of Bethany Evangelical and Reformed Church in Ledyard. For many years, Dewey played fast pitch softball with his brothers and brothers-in-law and then with other area teams. In later years, he competed in horseshoe pitching tournaments and won numerous trophies. Duane enjoyed spending time with his family. He was always ready to play board games or cards.
Duane became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society in Algona in July of 2016. He died there on Sunday, Aug.18, 2019, at the age of 94.
He is survived by his four children, Carolyn Marshall of Algona, Marvin Johnson and wife Nancy of Whittemore, Marlene Boeckholt and husband John of Burt, and Jerry Johnson and wife Becky of Bancroft; his grandchildren, Mandy Marshall, Molly (Fernando) Perez, Bethany Marshall, Jennifer (Eric) Gogerty, Eric Johnson, Jesse Johnson, Ryan (Shelly) Boeckholt, Ramsey Boeckholt, Brice (Amanda) Boeckholt, Lexa Boeckholt, Jared (Tasha) Johnson and Amy (Joe) Oxenford; and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Viola Albers of Britt; three sisters-in-law, LaDonna Johnson, Lillian Johnson and Ramona Johnson; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Laura, on May 24, 2015; his brothers, Glen, Raymond, Ervin, Everet, Reuben and Merl; and sisters, Laura Willey, Alice Nauman, Luella Hagedorn and Helen Kessel.
