Donna Marie Merrick
Funeral services for Donna Merrick were held Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019, at Algona Faith Church with pastor Curtis Trulson presiding. Burial took place at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Donna Marie Merrick was born Oct. 8, 1946, in Yankton, S.D., to Russell and Ardeell (Brunner) Georgeson. She grew up in Turkey Ridge, S.D., and attended grade school in a one-room country school, District 38. She graduated from Hurley High School in 1964.
Donna was united in marriage on Sept. 11, 1967, to Norman Smith in Yankton, S.D. To this union, four children were born, and they raised their family in Council Bluffs, Iowa. While living there, Donna worked at Kmart for 25 years, retiring after Norman died Jan. 12, 1996. She volunteered for many organizations while she was there. She later married John Merrick on June 1, 2002, in Sioux Falls, S.D., where they lived until his passing on Oct. 5, 2017. Donna then moved to Burt, Iowa, to be closer to her children.
Donna was a very kind-hearted, loving, caring, giving and joyful person. She was one of very few words, but when she spoke she meant what she said. Donna enjoyed spending time with family, doing crossword puzzles, volunteering and helping others. Growing up, Donna was a second mom to her younger siblings. Every Christmas, Donna enjoyed making Christmas ornaments and candy to give to her family.
Donna died Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City. She was 72.
Donna is survived by her daughters, Michelle Smith of Burt, Cynthia (Bob) Avery of Puyallup, Wash., and Jennifer Lemus of Burt; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; stepchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; siblings, Carolyn (Richard) Cink, Joe (special friend, Karon Wilson) Georgeson, and Marcia Sunderman; and sister-in-law, Linda Georgeson.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Norman Smith and John Merrick; parents; daughter, Theresa Hutchinson; an infant child; siblings, William Georgeson, Darrell Georgeson and Kenneth Georgeson; and a brother-in-law, Robert Sunderman.
