Delbert C. Ostwald
Delbert Carl Ostwald was born July 7, 1927, in Whittemore, Iowa, the son of Theodore and Alma Esther (Brass) Ostwald. He grew up in Whittemore and attended country school until the eighth grade. Delbert was called to active service with United States Army in 1945 and proudly served his country during World War II.
Delbert had two loves of his life. His first was Gladys Wittmann, and they were united in marriage on Sept. 22, 1949, in Whittemore. His second love was his 1943 Model A John Deere tractor. Delbert did not have many hobbies but enjoyed working. Delbert operated a business partnership, Ostwald Feed and Supply, with his son and helped area farmers in the evening with field work. He also did small engine and lawn mower repairs. He enjoyed dancing, bowling and playing cards. He was a member of the Seely-Walsh American Legion Post #425 and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Whittemore, where he was a past board member and trustee.
Delbert died Monday, Aug. 19, 2019, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City. He was 92.
Delbert is survived by his children, Bruce (Cindy) Ostwald of Whittemore, Brian (Kristen) Ostwald of Whittemore, Barry (Rhonda) Ostwald of Algona, Beth (Mike) Buscherfeld of Whittemore, Blaine (Lisa) Ostwald of West Des Moines and Bradley Ostwald of Whittemore; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Melvin (Shirley) Ostwald of Whittemore; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; parents, Theodore and Alma; granddaughter, Angela Bergman; great-grandchildren, Jevin and Jaxon Kramer; sisters, Eleanor Wagner and Dorothy Kuntz; and brother, Charles Ostwald.
Funeral services for Delbert were held on Friday, Aug. 23, 2019, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Whittemore. Burial was in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Whittemore, with military honors conducted by the Seely-Walsh American Legion Post #425 of Whittemore.
