Cecilia “Sally” Koppen
A funeral mass for Cecilia “Sally” Koppen was celebrated Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Whittemore, with Father Ed Girres presiding. Burial was in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery.
Cecilia “Sally” Koppen was born Nov. 28, 1923, in St. Joseph, the daughter of Michael and Bertha (Wiesenberg) Wiltgen. She grew up and attended school in St. Joe, graduating from the St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1941. After her schooling she did domestic work for families in the area.
On Sept. 9, 1943, Sally was united in marriage to Ralph Koppen at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Whittemore. They lived their entire married lives in Whittemore where they raised their six children. Sally also wrote for the Whittemore Champion Newspaper and the Algona paper. She later worked at the Plantation Ballroom and at Pioneer.
Sally enjoyed being with her family, especially the time she was able to spend with the grandchildren. She also enjoyed sewing, reading, gardening, canning, cooking, camping, traveling south in the winter and baking her famous cinnamon rolls. Sally enjoyed music, playing both the violin and accordion.
Sally died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019, at her home in Whittemore. She was 95.
She is survived by her children: Paul (Mary) Koppen, Wheatfield, Ind.; Bob (Meg) Koppen, Lansing, Kan.; Marilynn (Jim) Spain, Hopkins, Minn.; Jean (Joe) Kulzer, Menomonie, Wis.; Dan Koppen (Lori Mills), Memphis, Tenn.; Dave (Diane) Koppen, Whittemore; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph on June 6, 2007; and seven brothers and sisters.
