August "Augie" Homer Schmidt was born Aug. 27, 1926, on a farm near Woden, the son of Paul and Lucy (Willett) Schmidt. He grew up in Woden until seventh grade when his family moved to Lone Rock. He graduated from Lone Rock High School in 1945. After high school, Augie enlisted in the United States Army, and he proudly served his country. Following his service he farmed near Lone Rock until 1948. He then moved to Algona.
Augie worked for Loss Bros. Buick Garage for Dick Sorenson, Schultz Bros. Buick Garage, Phil Schneider Plumbing and for Universal until retiring at the age of 72. He enjoyed camping, fishing, woodworking and spending time with his family. Augie also enjoyed spending three weeks every year camping down by Pella. He was a member of the Algona VFW Post #2541.
August died Friday, March 22, 2019, at Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona. He was 92.
August is survived by his children, Lynn and Miriam Schmidt, Charles and Rochelle Robinson, Carol and Gilles Allouche, David and Wendy Robinson, and Bobie and Phil Blocker; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Cyrilla Marti and Verna Penning; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Fern; parents, daughter, Linda Parsons; sisters, Margaret Baas, Nellie Phillips, Alice Weig and Rose Baas; and brothers, Virgil and Ivan.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 26, at Oakcrest Funeral Services, Algona. Inurnment will be at a later date with military honors conducted. Online condolences may be left at www.oakcrestfuneralservices.com.
