2023 KCA Academic All-Stars

The Kossuth County Advance (KCA) has announced selections for its annual Academic All-Stars. The students are picked by the KCA staff after nominations are received from the four local school districts the newspaper covers on a regular basis – Algona, Bishop Garrigan, North Union and West Bend-Mallard.

The selections are made based on criteria that involve a complete high school career that included academic performance and involvement in school and community activities.

Lu Verne’s Final Chapter

Students and faculty at the Lu Verne Elementary School made the most of this past year knowing it would be the last. After years of planning the Lu Verne School District has consolidated with the Algona School District.

Kossuth County Community Foundation provides $20,000 grant to Central Park project

ALGONA—The Kossuth County Community Foundation awarded a grant of $20,000 to the City of Algona Parks and Recreation Department to support the Central Park Redevelopment Project and Splash Pad campaign.
“We are thankful to the Kossuth County Community Foundation for awarding a grant to this project,” said Recreation Manager Nick Diers. “We appreciate their support, and we are looking forward to the big changes that are coming soon to Central Park.”

Area graduates honored at 21st Annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony

DES MOINES—Four area 2023 graduates were recognized by Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Governor Adam Gregg for outstanding academic achievement at the 21st Annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony on April 30 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.

Algona DAR scholarship winner announced

ALGONA—Each year, at the local, state and national levels the DAR Good Citizens program encourages and rewards the qualities of good citizenship among high school seniors: dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. This program is open to a member of the 2023 class attending accredited public and private secondary schools. A school may select only one DAR Good Citizen per year. These students are invited to participate in the optional scholarship essay contest.

Refugee to speak at First Presbyterian Church

ALGONA—On Sunday, June 11, First Presbyterian Church in Algona will welcome back guest preacher, Rev. Paul Both, who was a refugee from South Sudan, Africa. Bound to Sudan by his devotion to sharing God’s ministry, he’ll talk about his ongoing mission work there with South Sudan Education Mission of which he is president and founder. SSEM is dedicated to improving Christian education and living conditions in New Nation South Sudan and Ethiopia. Rev.

Ingathering Hunger Grant received

ALGONA—The Hospitality Committee for the Algona First United Methodist Church announces receipt of an Ingathering Hunger Grant from the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church. The $250 Grant will help stock the church’s SERVE shelves. SERVE at Algona First UMC is stocked with non-perishable foods and is available 24/7 to anyone who is in need.

ALGONA—The Bishop Garrigan sixth grade students and their teachers, Miss Renetta Seiler and Mrs. Mandy Glawe, spent  Tuesday, May 2, at the Algona Iowa Lakes Community College campus for the Entrepreneur for a Day program.

Kemna employee receives prestigious $2,500 IADA Foundation scholarship

 

ALGONA—Kemna Auto Center announces that one of their part-time Quick Lane employees, Cayden Anderson, has been awarded a $2,500 scholarship by the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association (IADA) Foundation. Anderson started with Kemna Auto Center as a summer intern in 2022, quickly proving his passion for the automotive industry.

Hauswirth named DAISY Award winner

ALGONA—Kossuth Regional Health Center has awarded Madison Hauswirth with the 2023 DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses as part of National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week celebration.

Hauswirth is a registered nurse at KRHC and has been serving patients at the hospital since 2019. She was nominated by her patient, Hunter Berte, who delivered her baby at KRHC in December.

North Union FFA at leadership event

AMES—North Union High School FFA Chapter joined FFA chapters from across Iowa to  attend the 95th Iowa FFA Leadership Conference on April 16-18 at Iowa State University’s Hilton Coliseum in Ames.

The Iowa FFA State Leadership Conference is one the largest of its kind in the National FFA Organization.
