RUTLAND—Governor Kim Reynolds, Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and Representative Mike Thompson visited West River Meats in Rutland last week, where Governor Reynolds signed HF 185.

Mayor signs proclamation at senior center

ALGONA—Mayor Rick Murphy signed a proclamation at the Algona Senior Center proclaiming May 2023 to be Older Americans Month on May 12 during the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce Coffee that morning.

The proclamation stated, among other things, that the Algona Senior Center includes a growing number of older Americans who contribute their time, wisdom and experience to our community.

Human trafficking: Modern day slavery founder of Lila Mae's House to present on human trafficking

WEST BEND—West Bend Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Daughters of America will host longtime human safety advocate Sister Shirley Fineran as she presents an educational seminar about human trafficking on Thursday June 8 in the parish hall at 6 p.m. Free-will offerings will be accepted to defray Sister's travel expenses, help to continue her work and that of Lila Mae's shelter in Sioux City.

FORT DODGE—On Monday May 1, the Webster County Recorder’s Office assisted a resident with questions about a confusing letter they received, which was quickly identified as a scam and reported to local law enforcement. Fenton Library News

The glass in the front windows at the Fenton Public Library was recently replaced. According to Lori Peterson, library director, the old windows were marred and clouded from leaking gas between the panes and disintegrated seals. The windows were no longer energy efficient and were starting to develop drafts.

The Algona Police Reserves Unit is now accepting applications for volunteer officers through the police reserve program.

Buckle Up

 

DES MOINES—The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is urging Iowans to buckle up during the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Click It or Ticket high-visibility enforcement effort. The national seat belt campaign, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, is May 22 to June 4, 2023.

Happy Graduation Day

Thirty-six graduates were awarded diplomas during the 2023 Bishop Garrigan High School commencement exercises on Sunday, May 14. Family and friends packed the Friedmann Auditorium at the high school for the afternoon ceremony.

The senior class motto was: “Take pride in how far we have come. Have faith in how far we will go.”
