Algona Public Library receives $10,000 grant

ALGONA—The Algona Public Library has been selected to receive a $10,000 grant as part of a program that provides assistance to small and rural libraries to help them better serve people with disabilities.

Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award nominations requested

DES MOINES—Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and Department of Natural Resources Director Kayla Lyon invite Iowans to nominate individuals or families for the 2024 Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award.

Iowa farmers and landowners who implement proven practices to improve water quality and incorporate farming practices that conserve and protect Iowa’s natural resources are eligible for the award.

Iowa ranks 12th nationally in honey production

DES MOINES—Honey production from producers with five or more colonies in Iowa totaled 2.64 million pounds in 2023 according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Honey report.

This was eight percent higher than the 2.45 million pounds produced in 2022. The number of honey producing colonies in the state, at 40,000, was down 8,000 from 2022.

Iowa Ag Week celebrated

DES MOINES—Iowa Ag Week began on Sunday, March 17 and runs through Saturday, March 23. The weeklong statewide celebration, which includes National Ag Day on March 19, will highlight the immense importance of agriculture to the state, its people, economy and way of life.

The week will also highlight ways that Iowa agriculture gives back, positively impacting fellow Iowans through community involvement and volunteer service.

A free homemade noodle workshop will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 23 at the West Bend Library. The library is supplying the ingredients. Space is limited, please RSVP by March 22 to the library. Participants will make a batch of noodles for the library fundraiser and a batch to take home.

Brent is the son of Dan and Tammy Butcher of Grinnell.

Tietz Foundation donates land for park expansion

ALGONA—The Donald R. Tietz Charitable Foundation is donating property to the City of Algona for the purpose of expanding and improving public parks and recreation in the community.

The site of the former Peck Auction House is located south of the Algona Aquatic Center and South Park pickleball courts, and spans over approximately 51 acres. The land includes open greenspace, wooded areas and access to the East Fork Des Moines River.
