Up close look at the animals

North Union FFA members and FFA Advisor Sarah Manderfeld brought a petting zoo to the North Union Elementary in Fenton at the end of the school year.

All the classes had the opportunity to hold and touch the animals and ask the FFA members questions about them.

Following the visits, the classes enjoyed either a snow cone or mini-donut treat from a mobile food truck, funded by the student activity account from school fundraisers.

Farming and gardening activity

North Central Iowa Ag in the Classroom staff recently had the opportunity to teach kids about farming and gardening at the Algona Public Library through reading books and completing a Garden in a Cup activity during their weekly story hour.

North Central Iowa Ag in the Classroom plans to visit area libraries this summer with the programs Garden in a Cup and Magic Nuudles. There will be stories and an activity led by the NCI AITC educators.

Call it superstition or a Murphy’s Law approach, but a multi-year drought can bring out odd behaviors in some of us. Whatever it takes to attract more rain! For instance, if it looks a bit cloudy for the farmers market, we leave our tent at home to try and make the drops fall.

ALGONA—Ryan Merrill graduated from Algona High School in 2021, and he obtained his commercial drone license while attending college at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville. Now, he has turned a hobby into a business with Merrill Drone Services.

Interns collecting for Project Hope

 

Interns from the K/PACEDC Intern Program traveled to the Kossuth County and Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors meetings where they presented the Project Hope Proclamation. Both counties’ boards voted unanimously to sign the weeks of June 18 through July 1 as official Project Hope weeks.

NEW Cooperative Foundation donates to local 4-H clubs

KOSSUTH COUNTY—The NEW Cooperative Foundation continues their commitment to supporting local 4-H youth. Recently, the foundation donated $52,020 to 22 county extension and outreach offices, which will support 3,468 individual 4-H members.

Vaske receives scholarship

 

This was the first year Gold-Eagle Coop has offered scholarships to graduating seniors pursuing higher education. The scholarship committee enjoyed reading through the 11 applications submitted from many of the area schools and selecting two deserving candidates for a scholarship of $500 each.

The annual Algona Area Chamber of Commerce golf outing will be held on Friday, June 23 beginning at 1 p.m. at River Road Golf Club and Algona Country Club.

Storytime at Call State Park

Storytime at Call State Park Shelterhouse is planned for 10 a.m. on Friday, June 23. In case of rain the storytime will be held at the Algona Public Library.
