Wesley’s new signs, works of art

Driving down Hwy 18 by Wesley you will see two new signs announcing the arrival to the city.

Discussion of new signs have been going on for a few years. When Wesley celebrated their centennial a couple years ago they held a contest and let people submit their own design and then people voted on them.

David Reding had the winning design made out of metal and created to rust and age naturally.

First art exhibit at Carnegie a success

Despite not being finished, the Carnegie Centre for the Arts opened its doors and welcomed art enthusiasts anxious to have events in the historical building. The exhibit featured paintings from Russell Cowles, grandson of one of Algona’s founders and Mary Call, daughter of one Algona’s founders; and John Enkeboll, Omaha artist who painted Iowa locations brought by art collector Jason Noteboom. He also brought art from his ancestor Daniel Noteboom and Northfield Minnesota artist J.J.

A brighter Burt

Burt is brighter now, thanks to Matt Tindle and Bob Schissel from T&S Sandblasting in Corwith. They were commissioned by Burt Beautiful 100 to Care to sandblast and paint 40 fire hydrants in Burt. Normally, people don't get very excited about fire hydrants, but people can't stop talking about how much it brightens up the town.

NEW Cooperative supports Whittemore Fire Department

 

WHITTEMORE—The Whittemore Fire Department recently received a contribution from the NEW Cooperative Foundation totaling $2,500. The funds will be put toward the department’s recent purchase of a new tanker trunk. NEW Cooperative also presented an additional $2,500 in matching funds from the CHS, Inc. Seeds for Stewardship program.

“The new tanker truck provides an additional 2,000 gallons of water our fleet can take to a fire,” said Eric Goodman, Whittemore Fire Chief.

alking about food, new recipes and cooking ideas definitely falls into the realm of “Things I Love to Do!”

With that in mind, perhaps you can imagine my delight when my eldest son started asking me questions about food preparation the other day. I was so glad to hear that frozen pizza wasn’t the only item on the menu since he left for college.

Last Call Before Fall will feature fun for all ages downtown Algona

ALGONA—Have you always wanted to sing some karaoke? Or maybe ride in a horse drawn wagon or sit in a fire truck? You can do all that and much more during the family fun festival, Last Call Before Fall in downtown Algona.

The fall themed event, set for Saturday, September 23, from 4-7 p.m., will be held on State Street from Harlan Street to Thorington Street.

AMU awards bid for water project

ALGONA— The Algona Municipal Utilities Board of Trustees has accepted the low bid of $600,000 from Wynn Company, LLC based in Warsaw, Ill., for the Highway 18 water main improvements project.

Create a scarecrow to help dress-up Jones and State Streets

ALGONA—The Algona Area Chamber of Commerce is inviting individuals, families, businesses and organizations to make a scarecrow to help "dress-up" Algona this fall.

Posts will be available to decorate at the corner of Jones and State Streets. The post locations are first come first serve.

Kylie Skow earns 4.0 grade point

 

DES MOINES—Kylie Skow of Wesley earned president’s list honors at Des Moines Area Community College for the summer semester. To be eligible for the president’s list, a student must have completed a minimum of six credits and earned a 4.0 grade point average for that semester.

First international cuisine dinner to feature Cuban cuisine

 

ALGONA—What amazing people we have in Algona! A group of very special people is planning a dinner for those who enjoy international cuisine: International Delight: Cuba Night. The first dinner, hosted by the Algona United Church of Christ (UCC) on Wednesday, Sept. 20, will feature Cuban food; future dinners will feature other countries represented among Algona residents.

Darn the luck

Maximize your luck by adopting the nation’s luckiest numbers, days, colors and even items of clothing. According to a survey by casino.com, 30 percent of Americans believe that a number can bring you good luck with 26 percent of people claiming that 7 was their lucky number. The survey also revealed that 12 p.m.  on a Friday in March is the luckiest time of the year for Americans - even luckier if you’re wearing a blue sweatshirt.
