Florida Governor Ron DeSantis brings campaign to Kossuth Co.

ALGONA—Florida Governor and 2024 presidential hopeful Republican Ron DeSantis and his wife, First Lady of Florida Casey DeSantis, were in Algona Saturday morning, August 26, as special guests at an event hosted by Never Back Down at the VFW. Gov. DeSantis said Kossuth County is the 47th county in Iowa, he has visited in the last few months.

Heitland recognized as outstanding educator

 

ALGONA—An award named for long-time Algona Community School Foundation board member, David Shumway, was given to Brad Heitland for his exemplary career as a teacher.

Barb Teeter of the Algona Community School Foundation made the announcement at a teachers’ workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 22. Following the presentation, Heitland shared his thoughts on successful teaching.

Mission Fest at Bethany E&R Church

LEDYARD—Bethany E&R Church, Ledyard, will be hosting their annual Mission Fest, Sunday, Sept 10. They invite all to attend any or all of the day’s events. Director of Mission To the World’s Mid-America Hub Dale Hollenbeck will be speaking at both the 9 a.m. Sunday school service and the 10 a.m. church services. A noon meal will follow the church services, everyone is invited.

Gregg named 1440 Citizen of the Month

KOSSUTH COUNTY—The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office is honored to recognize Shirley Gregg of Algona as the August “1440 Citizen of the Month”. Shirley and her late husband, Leonard, have been instrumental in numerous activities within their church over the decades and were well known to volunteer their time to help others.

Skate Park event draws crowd

Skaters enjoyed a sunny, breezy day at the Central Park Skate Park on Saturday, August 26. The skate park opened for use earlier this summer for skateboards, rollerblades, scooters and bikes. Basic Shirt Company of Fort Dodge hosted an event in the park on Saturday featuring contests and skating demos.

Hill graduates from Iowa Law Enforcement Academy

DES MOINES—Attorney General Brenna Bird congratulated Deputy Caleb Hill on his graduation from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) in a ceremony held at Valley Church in West Des Moines on Friday. The graduation ceremony was attended by family, friends and law enforcement officials from across the state.

Eastern Star presents award to Debra Copple

The Iowa Order of the Eastern Star makes annual awards for religious leadership through the ESTARL program (Eastern Star Training Award for Religious Leadership). The ESTARL program was established in 1953 and has given awards every year since then. The Algona Chapter #68 OES has donated to this program annually and refers individuals to the Iowa Eastern Star Education Board. The Algona Chapter was pleased to recommend Debra Copple this year.

2023 AHS Wall of fame

Representing the 1969 Class AA State Wrestling Champions  from left: Phil Bode, Bruce Bennett and Duane Hunt. The 1969 wrestling team completed a season for the ages by finishing the year undefeated in dual meets. The team capped off the season by winning the Class AA State Championship, which was held for the last time in Waterloo, at the Hippodrome.

hat a long, strange trip this growing season has been! This season has brought an interesting mix of hot and cold temperatures (sometimes all in the same week), drought conditions in June followed by rain in July, winds, hail and an odd mixture of pests. Many bugs seem to be non-existent this year, while grasshoppers and some others seem to be more plentiful than usual.

Merron’s artwork places second in national contest

Hanna Merron, daughter of Andy and Lisa Merron of Bancroft, recently received second place in the Catholic Daughters of America Education Contest. Merron’s art entry received first place at the local and state level which qualified the entry to advance to the national level. This year’s theme was “Walk by faith, not by sight”.

Peyton and Sadie (Schilling) Schindler  announce the birth of their son, Blake Bennett, on August 17, 2023, at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake. He weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces and was 21 inches long.

Blake is welcomed home by siblings, Kael, Hadlee, Keaton and Drew.

Maternal grandparents are Dave and Debbie Schilling of Sheldon. Paternal grandparents are Deb Schindler of Algona, and the late Steve Schindler.

Jae Jean Hoover

Ryan and Jayna Hoover of Ankeny announce the birth of their daughter, Jae Jean, on July 19, 2023, at Unity Point Health - Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.  Jae weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces and was 20 inches long.

Welcoming her home were sisters, Hayes and Reese and brother, Hank.

Maternal grandparents are Terry and Trudy Blome of Ledyard. Paternal grandfather is Ted Hoover of Burt.

Smith 104th

Whittemore native Mary Corinne Smith celebrated her 104th birthday on August 27. She lived in Algona until moving at the age of 92 to be near her daughter in Delaware.
