Highly pathogenic Avian Influenza cases confirmed in Kossuth, Cerro Gordo Counties

DES MOINES—The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) have confirmed positive cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Kossuth and Cerro Gordo Counties.

Crop progress condition released

DES MOINES—Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig has commented on the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. 

“The unseasonably warm and dry weather this past week offered Iowa farmers another suitable stretch to finish up harvest and tackle other farm work,” Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Naig said. 

Water summary update

DES MOINES—October’s above-normal precipitation broke a streak of drier-than-normal months that began in March, according to the latest Water Summary Update. 

October’s statewide average precipitation was 3.12 inches, or 0.43 inches above normal. The heavy rainfall in northwest Iowa led to an improvement to “normal” conditions according to the Iowa Drought Plan.

WEST BEND—An accident two miles west of Ottosen and four  miles south of West Bend in Humboldt County claimed the life of one man and sent another to the hospital Wednesday night around 5 p.m.

Golden Bears Roll into 8-Player Title Game

CEDAR FALLS—Bishop Garrigan overcame 12-0 and 20-6 deficits and rolled past Winfield-Mount Union, 34-20, in an eight-player state semifinal football game today (Wednesday) at the UNI-Dome.

The Golden Bears (11-1) will play for a state championship next Thursday, Nov. 16, at 9:30 a.m., at the Dome in Cedar Falls. They will face Bedford (12-0), which kicked a 24-yard field goal with 24 seconds remaining to defeat Gladbrook-Reinbeck, 31-30, in the other semifinal. 

Geelan honored at Legacy Ball

ALGONA—More than $81,000 was raised to support local healthcare at the Kossuth Regional Health Center Foundation's 21st Annual Legacy Ball on Nov. 4. More than 200 guests attended the "A Night in Wonderland" event at the Columbia Events Center in Algona.

Serving up the pancakes

Jim Sloter was the pancake maker and one of many volunteers who worked at the all-you-can-eat pancake, egg and sausage breakfast Saturday morning, Nov. 4 at the Active Seniors of Algona Center. Halloween Party in Wesley

Wesley’s Halloween party attracted some of the most fun people in the county on Sunday, Oct 29. They came in disguise to save their families embarrassment. Algona High school gave a stellar performance Oct. 28 and 29 when they presented the play Catch Me If  You Can, produced by Todd Herbst-Ulmer and Adam Orban.

Algona Rotary Jack O’Lantern Lane

People gathered at the Kossuth County Conservation maintenance shed on Sunday, Oct. 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. to carve pumpkins from Bode’s Moonlight Garden. The shop is located just off of Highway 169 on the southeast corner of Smith Lake.  The free carving event was sponsored by the Algona Rotary Club. People returned to Smith Lake that evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to drive through the campground and view all the Jack O’Lanterns lit up.
