The holidays are upon us, and while there’s loads of merry-making and fun to be had. The changes and sensations of the season can add stress to the lives of children and their families. Making a plan, thinking about your child’s needs, and adjusting your expectations can help you create a positive holiday experience for the entire family.

Think Up, Drink Up Trivia Night begins with 6 p.m. registration and trivia rounds start at 6:30 p.m. at the VFW in Algona on Thursday, Dec. 28. There is no entry fee for the competition which will feature teams of one to six people. The Algona Area Chamber of Commerce presents the event.

Report shows milk cow numbers same as Nov. 2022

Milk production in Iowa during November 2023 totaled 480 million pounds, up slightly from the previous November according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Milk Production report.

The average number of milk cows during November, at 239,000 head, was unchanged from last month and unchanged from November 2022. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,010 pounds, up 10 pounds from last November.

Master Gardening Home Gardening series set

AMES— The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener program will again host the Home Gardening Webinar Series, beginning in January and ending in March. Sessions will take place every Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. ending March 12.

Water quality partnership project established with Iowa Pork, INREC

DES MOINES—The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) and the Iowa Nutrient Research and Education Council (INREC) will partner with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship on a “batch and build” water quality project in targeted Iowa watersheds.

Registration open for Farm Forward event

DES MOINES—Farm Forward, an interactive and farmer-focused event powered by the Iowa Soybean Association (ISA), will be held Tuesday, Jan. 30, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Downtown Marriott in Des Moines. Registration is available at no additional cost and open at iasoybeans.com.

Nominations sought by January 2 for renewable fuels marking awards

DES MOINES—Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig is encouraging Iowans to nominate fuel marketers in their communities for the Renewable Fuels Marketing Awards.

The secretary’s annual awards were created to recognize retailers that go above and beyond in their efforts to promote homegrown, renewable fueling options and develop innovative strategies to highlight the availability of higher biofuel blends at their retail locations.

Grinch goes free after speedy trial

It seemed like an open and shut case at the beginning of the Grinch’s trial last Monday as the crowd booed when the Grinch entered the Kossuth County Courtroom. The honorable Judge Ann Gales presided over the hearing. Sheriff Roger Fisher was the first to give his opening statements as the prosecutor representing the children of Kossuth County. Deputy Radmaker was sworn in as Fisher’s key witness.

Speaking for the defendant, the Grinch, was Cindy Lou Who.

Step back in time

Take a step back in time this holiday season with gifts and activities related to Algona’s history as a World War II Prisoner of War (POW) camp. Visit the Nativity Scene created by the prisoners, stop by the POW Museum, and pick up a copy of the “Silent Night in Algona” movie that was released for home entertainment in December.

Legion members hold food drive

The American Legion Hagg-Turner Post 90 held a canned food drive at Pizza Ranch last Monday, Dec. 4. The boxes of canned goods were for families of Kossuth County.
