FFA chapter hosts Giftmas

The North Union FFA Chapter hosted a community service project, Giftmas, to help support elementary aged students in the school district.

The purpose of Giftmas was to provide a present to every child grades preschool through 5th at both Swea City and Fenton Elementary Schools so that all students could celebrate the holidays.

More than $5,000 total raised for those battling cancer

Kossuth County Cancer Support Foundation’s Henrietta has made the rounds this year and once again has raised money for those battling cancer in the area. During KCCSF’s Designer Purse Bingo events, Henrietta is auctioned off and the highest bidder gets to use her to help collect donations.

Winners named at art show at Bishop Garrigan Art Show

Bishop Garrigan third through six  grade students spend four weeks in the fall and spring in the art room with Mrs. Rahm creating a variety of art projects that focus on specific artists or art mediums. BGHS students volunteer with Toys for Tots

Five senior student council members at Bishop Garrigan School helped set up for the Toys for Tots event in Mason City. The event helps more than 2,000 families have presents for kids for Christmas.

Teens making sure every teen has a great holiday season

Spearheaded by Lisa Louscher and Mandie Studer, a group of teens packed 50 bags at the First United Methodist Church in Algona containing a plush blanket, movie, popcorn, soda and treats for other teens in the community who may not get anything for Christmas. This group also made these gift bags last year and they were a huge success. Organizers said the high schoolers do such an awesome job every holiday making sure families have something special.

Leadership class completes new welcome sign

 

ALGONA—A City of Algona greenspace has become the home of the community’s new welcome sign. Large letters spelling out “ALGONA” in front of a colorful backdrop were placed in the small park on the corner of Jones and State Street in mid-November.

connect newcomers

A new social club will kick off in January, with the goal of providing networking opportunities for newcomers and individuals who have recently returned to the Algona area.

Algona Area Young Professionals is a project of the Algona Area Economic Development Corporation, with support from the City of Algona and the Tietz Entrepreneurial Center.

Opportunity for Iowa producers to complete cattle operations survey

DES MOINES—In January, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will survey about 41,000 cattle operations nationwide to provide an up-to-date measure of U.S. cattle inventories.

USDA announces 2022 Census of Agriculture data release details

DES MOINES—The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will release the 2022 Census of Agriculture data on February 13, 2024. NASS concluded the data collection this summer with a preliminary national return rate of 61 percent.

The ag census, conducted once every five years, was mailed to more than 116,000 producers across Iowa late last year with a preliminary return rate of just over 71 percent, the highest of any state.
