Felony Theft charge

On Nov. 10, 2023, the Kossuth County Sheriff's office took a report from board members of the North Union Sports Booster Club. The complaint was regarding money that had been stolen from the concession stand receipts from the summer baseball season between May to July of 2023. North Union Schools lease the baseball park in Bancroft and the North Union Sports Booster Club operates the concession stand.

Izaak Walton League Breakfast

Izaak Walton League breakfast is set for Sunday, Jan. 14 from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Ike’s building across from Smith Lake. Free-will donation serving eggs, sausage and pancakes. All proceeds go to the Algona High and Bishop Garrigan trapshooting programs.

Fatal house fire in Burt

BURT—According to a statement released by the Kossuth County Sheriff, on Dec. 21, 2023, at about 7:45 p.m., the Kossuth County Law Enforcement Center received a 911 call of a house fire in Burt. The Burt Fire Department and EMS were paged to the home of Marvin and Donna Tripp at 403 5th Street. A mutual aid request was paged out for area departments to respond due to the home being fully engulfed and still occupied.

They did it again

Last Wednesday and Thursday 37 local dancers graced the stage for two performances of the classic and popular ballet The Nutcracker. This is the second year local talent has had this opportunity and they did not disappoint.

Crowds walked away dazzled and delighted by the two-part, complex story and the dancers  undoubtedly walked away with polished skills and unforgettable memories. Amy Frankl-Brandt photos

Bid to Give helps older adults

Members of First Presbyterian Church in Algona recently held a silent auction fundraiser, Bid to Give, in which a variety of different themed baskets, crafts and food items were donated for bid. Proceeds of more than $1,000 was raised to support the Algona Senior Center and the Meals on Wheels Program that serves home delivered meals to approximately 730 older adults and military veterans who are homebound in our community each month.

ALGONA—In a display of commitment and expertise, four employees from Kemna Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM have been recognized by FCA US LLC for achieving certification in the 2022 Stellantis Performance Institute Certified Professionals Program. Bryce Petersen, Terril Johnson, Joe Heyes and Kevin Shaw stand out as exemplary professionals in the automotive industry, setting a high standard for dealership experiences.

Riggert is chamber’s last drawing winner

Waltz is finalist in STEM challenge

 

ALGONA—Emerson Waltz, a junior at Algona High School, was selected as one of seven outstanding Iowa youth that have been named finalists in the prestigious National STEM Challenge. Their exceptional achievements and dedication to STEM excellence have earned them this well-deserved recognition.

Sixth graders create ripple affect

When some of Shelby Berte’s sixth grade middle school students expressed an interest in helping thew community Berte knew just who to call.

“They were craving an opportunity to give back to our community. They even made a whole pitch and PowerPoint on why we should have a "Giving Group" basically for kids to get together once a week and do service projects for our community,” Berte said.

Fenton Library holiday event

The Fenton Library staff hosted their annual holiday open house on December 9. More than 60 members of the community were treated  to  homemade cinnamon rolls, hot cider and coffee along with door prizes and lots of conversation.

Santa visits Fenton

Approximately 150 people attended Fenton’s Santa Day on Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Legion building in Fenton.

Santa Claus arrived by fire truck and visited with everyone. Activities included crafts with members of the Fenton 4-H Clubs, refreshments, kid’s drawings for sleds, reading of library memorial ornament donations and musical entertainment by the North Union students.
