Henry’s Heroes deliver “Dream Kits” for children

WEST DES MOINES—Through its "Henry's Heroes" program, representatives from the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation and Iowa Select Farms recently delivered 500 "Dream Kits" to organizations that help children who are being rehomed due to unsafe and unstable family environments.

February is Heart Month when we show love to those in our lives.  Many people associate the holiday with sweets including chocolate or candies.

Sugar has been linked to many health problems including cardiovascular disease, obesity and high blood pressure.

Many Americans consume large amounts of sugar from sugar sweetened beverages, baked goods, candies, cereals and desserts.

Dick Deitering Memorial to award scholarship

The family of Dick Deitering has announced that scholarship applications are now available for 2024 for persons attending post-secondary trade/vocational programs. The forms are available at North Union, North Iowa, Bishop Garrigan and Algona High Schools as well as at Deitering Bros., Inc. in Bancroft.

Students get a taste of courtroom drama

This year Algona High School decided to bring back a fun activity for students to participate in, Mock Trial. In Mock Trial, students study a fake court case given to them. At the competition, they become the lawyers and witnesses fighting for their side of the case. After they prepare cases for both the prosecution and defense, they will present in front of a judge, like a real court case!

Harvest proclamation extended through Feb. 23

DES MOINES—Governor Kim Reynolds has signed an extension of the proclamation relating to the weight limits and transportation of grain, fertilizer, and manure.   

Entries open for best burger contest

DES MOINES—The Iowa Beef Industry Council (IBIC) and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association (ICA) announce the commencement of the 15th annual Iowa’s Best Burger contest.

Officials say this highly anticipated event has become a hallmark of culinary excellence, showcasing the diverse and delicious burgers crafted by Iowa’s talented chefs and restaurateurs.

Sweethearts for Seven Decades

Willis and LaBerta (Ostwald) Struecker first met when friends set them up on a blind date back in 1952. Prior to being set-up on that movie date in Algona which was a double date with friends, Willis admits he knew who LaBerta was from seeing her at church as both their families attended the same Lutheran church in Whittemore.

Peppmeier will lead WBM and Gilmore City-Bradgate CSD beginning July 1

WEST BEND—Paul Peppmeier has been named the shared superintendent of the West Bend-Mallard and Gilmore City - Bradgate CSD beginning July 1, 2024.

The new shared superintendent announcement came after a closed session at a special school board meeting in West Bend on Thursday, Feb. 1. The two finalists for the shared superintendent position were Johanna Cooper and Peppmeier.
