80 Years of LWML celebrated at Trinity Lutheran Church

 

ALGONA—LWML (The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League) is 80 years old this year, and the members of both Afternoon and Evening Circles at Trinity Lutheran Church, Algona, celebrated in style during the Bible Study hour on Sunday, October 2.  The Trinity Ladies Aid officially became members of LWML, Iowa N.W. District on September 9, 1946.

Reefer wins BINGO jackpot

 

Sandy Reefer (sitting) was the jackpot winner for the Noon Kiwanis Bingo on Monday night, Oct. 3 at the Algona Senior Center. Kiwanis bingo is the first and third Monday of the month at the senior center starting at 6:30 p.m. Reefer is pictured with Kiwanis Bingo Captain Mary Beth Hanson.

SHIIP counseling available at KRHC

ALGONA—Local volunteers will offer free Medicare counseling through the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) in-person again this fall.

Open enrollment letters were mailed out at the end of September to all who received an appointment last year. In order to schedule an appointment with a local SHIIP counselor, first complete the enrollment paperwork and return it in the mail.

Students go above and beyond

 

 

This month, all of the students at Bryant Elementary School went above and beyond practicing the elements or RISE (Respect, Integrity, Students First, Excellence). While many students could be nominated for the Specials Student of the Month, the specials teachers decided on the following students.

Oman joins Northwest Bank in Algona as Ag/Commercial Banker

 

 

ALGONA—Pat Berte, bank president of Northwest Bank in Algona announces Justin Oman as Ag/Commercial Banker, SVP. Justin’s responsibilities include new business development, promoting the banks vast products and services and serving existing customers. In addition, Justin will help lead the bank in developing long term relationships.

Scarlet Regiment Marching Band

The 2022 Algona High School Scarlet Regiment Marching Band performed at the IHSMA State Marching Band Festival and was awarded a Division I rating for its performance at the Dodger Stadium in Fort Dodge on Saturday, Oct. 8. This was the 43rd time the band has had its performance awarded a Division I since it began attending the State Festival in 1977. This year marks their 36th consecutive Division I rating. Homestead’s creation

Staff at Homestead of Algona created this scarecrow at the corner of State and Jones streets in Algona.

Area businesses, individuals and organizations have placed scarecrows with themes at the corner yard.

Kossuth County receives PIE award

 

ALGONA—State Auditor Rob Sand recently hand-delivered a pie to the leaders of Kossuth County in recognition of their Public Innovations and Efficiencies (PIE) Award. Kossuth County is the Best Performing County in the Middle Fifth category, based on the 2020 Census.

Toys for Tots, here’s how you can help

 

KOSSUTH COUNTY—Toys for Tots donation boxes have been distributed at businesses throughout Kossuth County for residents to drop off new, unwrapped toys and items for children ages 0-18. Items for children 13-18 are especially needed as well as new wrapping paper, scotch tape and books.

Algona students take field trips for P.E. classes

ALGONA—Mr. Kuecker was one of Algona’s PE teachers last year. This year he switched to special education. Mrs. TerHark is back to having a full time teaching job after being retired for two years.

When she taught at AHS two years ago, she was a business teacher and Algona’s athletic director. TerHark is the PE teacher for first semester this year.

Model UN prepares for state convention

ALGONA—The AHS Model UN team went to a conference on September 22. They met at NIACC in Mason City for the North Central Iowa Regional Conference. This meeting is the predecessor to the state convention in November. Members spent the day discussing ideas with other schools and writing papers about designated topics.

Nine students selected for 36th Opus Honor Choir

AMES—Nine Algona students were recently selected for participation in the 36th annual Opus Honor Choir Festival. More than 2,100 students were nominated by their directors for 720 positions in the four Opus Honor Choirs. Selections were made by means of a recorded audition.
